Euro 2024 Last 16 match at Olympiastadion, Berlin
TV: BBC One and RTE2

Granit Xhaka to Have 1 Or More shots on target

Granit Xhaka was more known as a patroller of the midfield in his Arsenal days and perhaps plays a slightly more defensive role for his current club Bayer Leverkusen, which has come off the back of a fantastic season.

For Switzerland, he has some leeway to roam forward more often and that’s resulted in a very consistent metric for his shooting. He has had at least one shot in seven of his last eight games and has hit the target in every group game so far. With the Italians likely to try and cut off space to Switzerland’s pacey attackers, Granit Xhaka can show his ability to time runs into the box at the right times and to shoot from range.

Italy Keeper to Make 2 or More Saves

Admittedly, Italy have come out of arguably the toughest group in the competition so far but Gianluigi Donarumma has been exceptionally busy. He has had to make 12 saves so far, the joint 4th highest total in the competition. Switzerland have shown their goalscoring capabilities with 5 goals already and he should be kept busy in the Italian goal.

With Breel Embolo seemingly back to full fitness and Dan Ndoye showing the kind of form that has Manchester United on his radar, I expect Switzerland to have chances, and good ones at that. He’ll have to be alert to the threat this Swiss side possess in a game I expect the Swiss to dominate at least in partial spells.

Breel Embolo to be fouled 2 or more times

Breel Embolo has had a tough time of it this season, with a major injury which ruled him out of the start of the season and he only made his comeback at the end of March. After finally getting some game time, he suffered a muscle injury which ruled him out of 3 games for club and country, and missed the warm-up fixtures for Switzerland.

Now with some minutes on the pitch, he looks close to match sharpness and has made an immediate impact, with opposing players wanting to return him to the physio’s room. In just a 30-minute outing against Scotland, he was fouled three times and in 65 minutes against Germany was also fouled three times. If he gets at least the amount of game time as he did against the Germans, he should have a very good chance of landing this line.

Mateo Retegui to have 3 or more shots

The country that has produced the likes of Totti, Del Piero, Baggio, Vieri, the Inzaghis, and many more, are now struggling on the striker front. Italian fans would probably snap your hands off for a forward line of the totally bonkers duo of Balotelli and Cassano.

Between them, the Italian forwards have managed just 1 shot on target during the entire Euros so far. Spaletti changed things in the final group game, replacing first-choice striker, Gianluca Scamacca with Mateo Retegui. Retegui actually has a better goalscoring record and ratio than Scamacca with 4 goals in his 11 Italian appearances so far.

Although he didn’t hit the target, he did have 3 attempts at goal. In his last proper outing for the national side in a game against Turkey back in March, he also had 3 shots and hit 5 against England in their 2-1 defeat last year. It suggests he relishes the pressure of big games and isn’t afraid to take a gamble on a shot. This makes him the last addition to our 4 leg bet builder.
