Italy’s 98th-minute goal against Croatia in their final Euro 2024 group game was vital in securing qualification. They also struggled against Albania, going behind to that 26-second opener and coming back to win. But that is Italy for you.
There are quite a few teams who may trouble them when it gets to this knockout stage. Switzerland is not going to be an easy game for Italy. Do you remember back to their first game against Hungary? For an hour they were fantastic. There is not a lot of pressure on them so they can sit back, let Italy attack, and try to nick it.
We sat down with Paddy’s mate Phil Thompson to get his thoughts for this Round of 16 face-off…

Will Italy trust Scammaca up front? That is the big thing, and that’s where I’m looking for my bets to go.
I don’t think the manager fancies him. I don’t think he is living up to that sort of scouse name that he has, “Scamacca”.
However, I am going for Italy to win the game. I do think it would be tight. But, I’m going for Italy to win 2-1.
Alongside an Italy victory, I’m backing Retegui to score, he did play instead of Scammaca in the last game.
I’m also backing Pellegrini to have 1 or more Shots On Target, he has featured well in Italy’s games so far.
As I have gone for 2-1 Italy, I am backing Both Teams to Score.
For Switzerland, I’m going for N’Doye to have 1 or more Shots On Target. I’ve been impressed by him coming in from the flank and getting shots away.
