Tuesday 5pm: Netherlands v Austria
Euro 2024 Group D match at the Olympiastadion, Berlin
TV: BBC2 and RTE2
Both Teams to Score
Under the management of Ralf Ragnick, Austria are set to deploy a high press in search of a transitional game. They opted for similarly bold tactics against France and were able to create two big chances. That being said, Les Blues’ 14 shots amounted to 2.13 xGF, as France took advantage of ample space in behind the Austrian defence.
Netherlands can exploit such a weakness, through players like Cody Gakpo and Jeremie Frimpong. However, the Dutch have been far from watertight themselves. They conceded one goal against Poland from 1.32 xGA, and were fortunate to keep a clean sheet against France in round two, having conceded 1.43 xGA. Austria netted three times against Poland, so should come in full of confidence. This game certainly has the potential to escalate into a shootout, given how both teams have been defensively underwhelming.
Netherlands Goalkeeper to Make 2+ Saves
Netherlands kept a clean sheet against France in round two, mostly thanks to goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen who made three saves. Prior to that, the Brighton player made six saves against Poland, preventing a total of 1.59 xG in total across the two games. Netherlands conceded 12 shots against Poland, and 15 shots against France.
Austria were enterprising in their recent game against Poland at the Olympiastadion, winning 3-1. The goal difference could have been more, as Szczesny made six saves in total. In round one, Ralf Ragnick’s men forced Mike Maignan into three saves, highlighting their potency in attack.

Kevin Danso to Commit 2+ Fouls
After Austria lost to France in round one, centre back Kevin Danso was benched against Poland. Gernot Trauner started in place of the 25-year-old, and got his side off to the perfect start, scoring a header within ten minutes. The Feyenoord captain was unable to see the game out, and was withdrawn due to injury at the hour mark. Danso replaced him, and is set to start against Netherlands.
Danso made two fouls against France, and one infringement off the bench against Poland. He is an extremely physical defender, which bodes well given that he will be up against the likes of Memphis Depay, Xavi Simons and Cody Gakpo. Danso has conceded two or more free-kicks in each of his last four starts for Austria.
Stefan Posch to Commit 1+ Fouls
Stefan Posch looked a bit uncertain against France, struggling to deal with the pace and trickery of Marcus Thuram and Kylian Mbappe. He ended that game with two fouls, neither of which were cynical enough to warrant a card. In round two, Posch conceded four free-kicks against Poland. The Bologna defender has made a foul in each of his last six starts for his country, at an average of 2.5 fouls per game.
His matchup against Cody Gakpo on the left wing is an extremely difficult one, given the willingness of the Liverpool forward to carry the ball and drive at his opposition fullback. He drew four fouls against Poland, with Frankowski making two of those.
