Monday, June 24: 20:00 – Albania v Spain
Euro 2024 Group B match – Dusseldorf
TV: BBC One

On Monday we have just two games but we find out who will progress from Group B and here we look at Albania v Spain. The Spanish have secured the top spot in the group already, which means we should see plenty of rotation here. That makes things both trickier to predict, but also offers potential value. It also gives Albania real hope that they can get the win they need to reach the Round of 16.

Here are our three best bets for Albania vs Spain. The best bet on the entire game, then one based around Paddy Power’s excellent Super Sub promotion and of course, a prediction for the result.

Best Bet: Both Teams to Score

Coming into this game we’ve seen both Spain and Albania impress. The Spanish have been exceptional at times, playing with a width that we’ve not seen from them in a major tournament in years. They’ve looked incredibly dangerous going forward and have been the most impressive team in Germany thus far.

The width is stretching opposition defenders and creating space that the rest of the team can take advantage of. We’re going to see changes to the lineup here but shouldn’t impact how they set up and we’ll see the same system used again.

Changes to the back four, which have kept two cleans sheet so far, will give real belief to the Albanians. This is a back four that aren’t used to playing with each other and that is an issue. Especially when this Albanian team haven’t been shy in front of goal. They scored early against the Italians, which probably didn’t help them in the long-run. Then against Croatia they scored twice, including a 95th minute equaliser that has kept them in this tournament.

The three goals have come from three different players which perhaps indicated that goals can come from anywhere. Against a makeshift defence we should see the most-motivated team in the match create chances. Albania are fighting for their lives, they should score at least once, the issue is whether their backline can keep out the Spanish, which also seems unlikely.

Super Sub Anytime Scorer: Ferran Torres

One man who is almost certain to start if Lamine Yamal is rested is Ferran Torres. The former Man City player has had a mixed season for his club Barcelona, thanks in part to the emergence of Yamal. He only started 12 of his 29 La Liga games, scoring just seven goals but he’s generally been slightly better on the big stage, with three goals in eight Champions League games, despite just three starts.

That’s something echoed with his international career. Despite having never felt like the main man at either Barca or City he’s picked up 43 caps for Spain and scored 19 goals. An average of just under a goal every other game is incredibly impressive and highlights just how good the 24-year old is at this level.

He’s come on in both games so far and despite playing just 23 minutes in total he’s already had a shot to his name. He’s yet to score but with a full game and playing a defence that have allowed four goals in two games, there’s a very high chance that he makes a mockery of the odds.

Correct Score: 2-2

Following Spain’s 1-0 win over Italy that secured their status as group winners, we have to look at this game very differently. We’re going to see Spain rest players, that feels almost inevitable. The question is how well they’ll perform, especially against an Albania team that’ll be throwing everything at the game to try and qualify for the Round of 16.

The defence has been solid with Marc Cucurella, Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand starting every game ahead of Unai Simon, with Nacho and Aymeric Laporte partnering Le Normand in one game each. That back four should be mixed up today with Jesus Navas and Alejandro Grimaldo both potential starters.

Having a new defence in front of a midfield and front line that will also see rotation is a recipe for miscommunication and struggles and Albania should be able to profit and score. The question is how they’ll deal with Spain’s attack, where even their second string are very good players. This has the potential to be an exciting game and a high scoring draw leaps out as a big price knowing what we do about Albania’s defence and Spain’s likely rotations.
