Cody Gakpo to commit 1+ Foul

Cody Gakpo put forth an impressive performance against Poland, scoring the equalising goal from distance to earn a man of the match award. The Liverpool winger has a propensity to press too keenly, exemplified by his foul numbers in more competitive international games. Gakpo committed a foul in all five games at the 2022 World Cup, as well as both knockout games in the Nations League.

Gakpo is to have more of a defensive role against France, looking to help contain the explosive Ousmane Dembele. The PSG winger has drawn at least two fouls in each of his last five international games, including two against Austria. Gakpo will likely be tasked with a lot of pressing, so is in prime position to extend his record of fouling against higher-ranking opposition.

Adrien Rabiot to commit 1+ Foul

Rabiot made two fouls against Austria in 71 minutes before being replaced by Camavinga. He battled hard, and was extremely willing to duel. In the qualifiers, Rabiot made a foul in five of the six games he started, including both fixtures against Netherlands. Prior to that, he made a foul in all five 2022 World Cup games in which he started. The Juventus midfielder has extremely promising foul data, and is set for a tough test against the Dutch.

Against Poland, Memphis Depay would typically drop into midfield, whilst Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons would come short, and make runs from deep. It meant the midfield areas were congested at times, so Rabiot could be a busy man. Netherlands drew just ten fouls from Poland, but this is now a massive game, with both sides vying for top spot. It could be more open, more aggressive, with Rabiot hopefully heavily involved.

Marcus Thuram 1+ Shots on Target

In the absence of Kylian Mbappe, Didier Deschamps will need his other attackers to step up against Netherlands, with a lot of the onus falling on Marcus Thuram, Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann to replace their captain. Thuram especially, who should have that left-wing role cemented. He managed five shots in France’s first game against Austria, which was the most of any French player – two of those hit the target.

Thuram has a pretty solid record against Netherlands, too. He had a shot on target in both qualifying games recently, despite appearing off the bench in Paris. It’s the perfect opportunity for Thuram to step up and announce himself on the big stage. A positive performance or a goal would surely secure a starting spot for future games in the competition.

France Goalkeeper to make 3+ Saves

Going back to the qualifiers, Mike Maignan landed this selection in both head-to-head games between France and Netherlands. The shot-stopper made five saves in Paris, and was a man of the match candidate in that 4-0 drubbing. In the reverse fixture, he made three saves. He also made three saves in round one against Austria – that was despite Les Bleus conceding just six shots in total.

Against Poland, Netherlands managed 21 shots, resulting in 1.46 xGF, which is relatively low, and suggests that most shots were speculative. Memphis Depay was particularly wasteful, and received criticism – underlining an issue for the Dutch that they are lacking a clinical goalscorer. With that being said, Netherlands should find chances, but Maignan looks poised to once again dominate the matchup.
