Euro 2024 Group C match – Frankfurt

I’m sorry, did I wake you? You must have dozed off watching England against Serbia.

Sunday night’s snorefest set a record for the fewest shots in a European Championship match (since records began in 1980). Player stat bets are hard to nail when the teams muster just 11 goal attempts between them.

This match mightn’t be much better. England have drawn 0-0 in their second game at the last two major tournaments, with Gareth Southgate’s cautious nature ensuring he’s been happy for his side to consolidate an opening win with a bore draw.

With Slovenia and Serbia playing earlier in the day, the requirements for Denmark and the Three Lions, my new band, will be clearer come kick off. Nonetheless, we have four Super Sub selections for you to mull over.

Remember, if the player you select in certain markets is substituted, his replacement then carries your bet. You have more chances to win, assuming something actually happens in the match.

Bukayo Saka to Score or Assist

Bukayo Saka’s primary attacking stats from the Serbia match do not make for pretty reading: no shots, zero chances created.

Yet this does him a slight disservice. The Arsenal winger effectively created the only goal of the game, it’s just that his cross took a touch off a defender on its way. Saka also had the most touches in the opposition box of any England player and was the top man on either side for dribbles completed.

He ended the club season in good form in this market too, scoring or assisting in five of his final nine matches, and in 12 of his last 20. As ever, Harry Kane is the logical choice here but there could be value if you back Saka.

Jude Bellingham to have 1 or more Shots on Target

This feels like an obvious pick in that Jude Bellingham was the only player who really looked like scoring for England last time out.

But he’s also a reliable selection in this market. He has had a shot on target in his last three competitive matches at international level and in five of the last six.

Bellingham regularly tested opposition goalkeepers for Real Madrid this season too. He had an attempt on target in 29 club matches in all competitions, the fifth best total of players in Southgate’s squad.

As he’s joint-10th in the betting in this market at the time of writing, that makes him sound like a decent choice, wouldn’t you say?

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Commit 1 or more Fouls in the First Half

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was not a regular starter for Tottenham Hotspur this season, only making it into Big Ange’s Premier League starting XI on eight occasions.

But as long as he had a decent amount of time on the pitch, the Dane found time to kick, trip, or take down somebody. For competitions where data is available, Hojbjerg has made 22 appearances that lasted at least 45 minutes for club in country in 2023/24. Of those, he committed at least one foul in 18 of them.

The 28-year-old doesn’t tend to hang around either. In Denmark’s previous match, against Slovenia, Hojbjerg gave away a free-kick in just the 11th minute. With England going to offer a far greater threat, we can assume the Tottenham midfielder will commit a foul in the first half of the match.

Morten Hjulmand to be Shown a Card

The only player from either of these teams to collect a card in the opening round of matches was Danish defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand.

While it may be unlikely he gets booked in a second successive match, he remains a good choice. He’ll likely be directly up against Bellingham, for one thing, which isn’t easy.

Hjulmand was also the second-most-carded Danish player in league football in 2023/24, with 12 yellows in 28 Primeira Liga matches for Sporting. Jannik Vestergaard topped him by one booking but played 12 matches more for Leicester, and that was in the Championship.

Referee Artur Soares Dias isn’t reckless with his notepad. But with two cards in his last five internationals and Denmark needing to defend hard against the group favourites, he will likely be writing the name ‘Morten Hjulmand’ in it on Thursday.
