Euro 2024 Group C match – Munich

Serbia to win

Serbia’s 1-0 defeat to England in their opening game of Euro 2024 was the worst game in the competition to date.

However, Dragan Stojkovic’s side acquitted themselves well against one of the competition favourites and can take a giant step towards the knockout stages if they beat Slovenia on Thursday.

Slovenia, on the other hand, battled to a 1-1 draw against Denmark in their opening game of the tournament and will all but guarantee progression to the knockout stages with a win.

They are not the whipping boys in Group C by any means and will pose plenty of problems.

Serbia, however, showed just about enough in their defeat to England that they have what it takes to claim victory in this must-win game.

Aleksandar Mitrovic to score anytime

Aleksandar Mitrovic was obviously held scoreless in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to England, but he is by far the most likely player to get on the scoresheet.

The Al Hilal striker has one of the best goal scoring records in international football, with an incredible 58 goals in 92 appearances for Serbia.

He was their top scorer in qualifying with five goals and is coming off the back of an excellent club campaign that saw him net 28 goals in 28 league games. That obviously comes with the major caveat that it was in Saudi Arabia.

Nevertheless, such a rich vein of form cannot be harmful to his confidence and he is decent value to hit the net.

He has scored in each of his two appearances at major tournaments for Serbia, in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. There is nothing to say he will not score against Slovenia.

Benjamin Sesko to have one or more shots on target

Benjamin Sesko is Slovenia’s big hope. The 21-year-old RB Leipzig forward was held scoreless in Slovenia’s 1-1 draw with Denmark on Sunday, but he came into the tournament with a ridiculously impressive record of scoring in seven consecutive games for Leipzig.

Sesko attempted two efforts on goal in the opening-day draw, while he averaged 1.5 shots per game in the Bundesliga last season.

Slovenia attempted 11 shots in total in their draw with Denmark and it would be surprising if they didn’t reach a similar number here. He is decent value to test Predrag Rajkovic at least once.

Serbia to commit 13 or more fouls

Serbia committed an astonishing 19 fouls in their defeat to England, averaging a foul roughly every five minutes.

It was a similar story in the build-up to this tournament.

In their two warm-up friendlies against Sweden and Austria, Serbia committed a combined total of 29 fouls (bearing in mind these are non-competitive games), while they averaged roughly 12 fouls per game in qualifying.

Considering this game almost definitely falls into the must-not-lose category for both sides, it is likely to be a fairly feisty affair and it wouldn’t be surprising in the slightest if Serbia committed at least 13 fouls.

Over 3.5 Cards

Both Serbia and Slovenia collected two cards apiece in their opening game of Euro 2024, with Slovenia also committing 12 fouls against Denmark.

Serbia also received four bookings in those two friendlies against Sweden and Austria and had Milan Gajic dismissed in their 4-0 defeat to Russia in a friendly in March.

They averaged just under two cards per game in qualifying and are clearly not shy of picking up a card or two. If they reach at least 13 fouls on Thursday, they will be more likely to receive at least two cards.

Slovenia, on the other hand, averaged exactly one card per game in qualifying but also averaged over 11 fouls per 90 minutes. They are almost as likely to commit a high number of fouls as Serbia and could easily collect a few more bookings.

Between them, they should reach four cards.
