Thursday, June 20 – 5pm: Denmark v England
Euro 2024 Group C match at Waldstadion, Frankfurt
Where to watch: BBC One, RTE2, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport Website
England will click into the groove and get better as the tournament goes on. I think they’ll have too much for Denmark but it will be an even tougher game than the one against Serbia.
I still fancy us to win and we’ll probably play better than we did against Serbia but it will be tight, something like 2-1 to England.
England have too many players who can hurt Denmark and it only takes a couple to be on it to make the difference as we saw with Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka on Sunday.
We were fantastic down the right-hand side against Serbia with Kyle Walker and Saka going at them, that scares anyone in world football. There was a slight issue on the left.
Kieran Tripper played well even though he was slightly out of position and Phil Foden didn’t look himself. There will be improvements there but Bellingham was a class act and we need to get Harry Kane into the game more.
Defensively England were good and that’s the area most people seem to be most worried about so that was a definite positive. I just think everyone will get better through the tournament and this will be another step forward.
Kane had such a quiet game and he was barely involved. He only had two touches in the first half but, barring an unbelievable save, he almost came away from the game with a goal.
If that goes in he’s up and running and on the Golden Boot leaderboard but you can never, ever write him off. You have to play him every game and he’s a huge threat whatever’s actually happening on the pitch.
Bellingham put in an all-action display, he was everywhere, putting in tackles, winning headers and he was aggressive.
He’s got the touch and the ability to get past people and he plays the right pass at the right time.
He’s got excellent timing when arriving into the box as we saw for the goal. It was just fantastic and he was brave to get in there and score it.
His confidence will have grown a little more, if that’s even possible, and he should be a big threat again on Thursday.
People sill be scared of Saka bombing down that right-hand side. They will have watched videos of him coming inside for Arsenal but he’s got the intelligence to go down the line and mix it up down the outside.
At Arsenal he doesn’t really have that No.9 to get to the byline and aim for but at England he’s got Kane and there’s few better players on the planet you’d want to be aiming for and rely on to get into the box.
If you’re going on the outside, as he did against Serbia, you need someone to cross to. Playing for your country is obviously different than your club and he’s adapted wonderfully, even though he’s playing in the same position.
Christian Eriksen’s goal for Denmark against Slovenia was fantastic but it could be Rasmus Hojlund that gives England most to think about. He played well in their first game and looked full of confidence, more so that he has at Manchester United anyway.
Eriksen is a class act, he makes them tick, and Denmark have caused us problems in games before. We always seem to end up playing Denmark, we usually manage to get past them, and I can’t see anything different happening this time.
