Switzerland to Win

Switzerland were relatively comfortable 3-1 winners over Hungary in their opening match and come into this game in far better form than Scotland, who were the victims of a 5-1 defeat to Germany on the opening night.

The Scots have won only one of their last 10 internationals and have performed woefully against elite opponents in recent times. Switzerland may be a step below the level of England, France, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany, but given all those teams were able to win by at least two goals against the Scots, Murat Yakin should be eyeing maximum points for his side in this game.

Over 1.5 Goals

With Scotland’s defensive record wretched in recent matches, over 1.5 goals in this game appears to be excellent value.

Steve Clarke’s side have conceded seven goals across their last two fixtures and look extremely flimsy in central defence, where their most notable player is Kieran Tierney, a figure who habitually plays on the left at club level.

Scotland have conceded at least two goals in eight of their last 10 matches. Northern Ireland and Gibraltar were the sides that failed to net at least twice in this sequence. Switzerland, meanwhile, have only been involved in one competitive match in their last 10 that has failed to yield at least two goals. They have conceded in eight of their last nine, with only Andorra shut out.

Ruben Vargas to have 1 or more Shots on Target

Ruben Vargas had two shots for Switzerland against Hungary in their opening match of the competition, both of which found the target.

He is a particularly attractive price in this game because he took up the type of positions in which Germany troubled Scotland so profoundly in Munich. He operated between the Hungarian midfield and defence, finding room to get shots away. This is an area that Steve Clarke’s side wholly failed to police properly in their last game.

Vargas is not afraid to shoot from range. In the Bundesliga with Augsburg, he had 2.25 shots per 90, with 34.7% of these finding the target. He will look to find pockets of space to exploit and will be a notable threat.

Callum McGregor to Commit 1 or more Fouls

Callum McGregor came into Euro 2024 posting 1 foul per 90 with Scotland in the domestic Premiership with Celtic.

Coming up against a different level of opposition, though, he is expected to do more defensive work and can expect to see his foul count rise. Indeed, it was notable that in three league starts against Rangers – the only team of comparable stature to Celtic defensively – he committed 10 fouls.

Against Germany, he gave away a couple of free kicks in the centre of the park. All of Scotland’s four central midfielders gave up at least one free kick, suggesting this was a problem as they came under pressure. Expect more of the same, albeit to a lesser extent.

Scotland to Commit 11 or more Fouls

A lack of aggression was one of Scotland’s problems on the opening night against Germany yet they still managed to give up nine fouls in that game. This was despite the tempo dropping from both sides in the second half when it was evident the match was over.

Expect Clarke’s side to offer a reaction. Scotland, after all, gave up a consistently high free-kick count in qualifying, when they were at their best.

Only once across their eight qualifying matches did they give up fewer than 11 fouls in a single match. Certainly, the Swiss should expect a more in-your-face approach from the Scots in Cologne.
