Euro 2024 Group A match – Stuttgart

Germany -1

Hungary came into Euro 2024 as many people’s dark horses, with many pundits tipping them to finish second in Group A.

However, their opening day defeat against Switzerland has threatened to unravel all of that hype and if they are to suffer a heavy defeat against an imperious-looking Germany on Wednesday, then they could follow in the footsteps of Euro 2020 dark horses Turkey and exit the Euros with a whimper in the group stages.

It is always difficult to know what kind of state a host nation is in prior to an international tournament due to the fact that they have not played a competitive match for the best part of two years. But Germany looked incredibly sharp in their opening game against Scotland.

Scotland, to be fair, did not offer much resistance, but there can be no denying that Germany were ruthless in putting them to the sword. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala are two of the most promising players at the Euros, while the likes of Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan provide plenty of experience in key areas.

They should have far too much for Hungary.

Jamal Musiala To Have One or More Shots On Target

Musiala clinically dispatched his goal against the Scots to put Germany two goals to the good and is good value to at least register a shot on target here.

He averaged well over two shots per game for Bayern last season and is playing for a German side that is likely to dominate every facet of the game.

Hungary faced a whopping 15 shots in their group opener against the Swiss, while Germany registered 20 shots in their stroll against the Scots, albeit they were playing against 10 men for more than half the game.

There is a good chance that Germany will at least match Switzerland’s tally against Hungary, and Musiala is good value to find the target with one of those efforts.

Hungary Over 2.5 Corners

Germany did not concede a single corner or shot on target against Scotland, but, once again, they were playing against 10 men for the majority of the game. That is not to mention that Scotland were absolutely awful even when they had 11 men.

Hungary will represent a sterner test, even if they are in danger of falling at the first hurdle themselves.

The Hungarians only managed two corners in their opening-day defeat against Switzerland, but they won 35 in their last seven games before the Euros at a rate of five per game.

They are no mugs and will cause some problems for Germany. They may just win three corners against them.

Germany to Commit 11 or More Fouls

Scotland may have lost a player last Friday, but Germany out-fouled their opponents considerably in the opening game of the competition.

It is not really that surprising, considering Hansi Flick emphasises an aggressive press that aims to win the ball back. Such tactics are always bound to result in fouls here and there.

Germany conceded 15 fouls against the Scots despite enjoying 73% of the ball, while Hungary drew 13 fouls against Switzerland despite enjoying slightly less possession than their opponents.

It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Hungary managed to draw at least 11 fouls even if Germany dominate the ball. Thew tournament hosts have conceded a minimum of 10 fouls in each of their last 10 games and a minimum of 11 fouls in nine of those games.

Germany Over 1.5 Cards

Germany also managed to pick up two bookings in that group opener against Scotland and could pick up a similar number in what will be a fairly physical encounter against Hungary.

In their last nine games before the Euros, Germany picked up nine cards, which is not a huge figure by any means, but it is notable that each of those games were friendlies so there was no need for them to pick up so many cards.

They seem to have a tendency to give away cards and face a Hungary side that drew two bookings against Switzerland on Saturday.

This is competition football and it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Germany’s card average rose significantly over the course of the next month.
