The new working week starts with a quick skive off work to watch Romania vs Ukraine. These two unfancied teams will be hoping they can qualify from what is arguably the weakest group in the competition.

Ukraine to Win
Ukraine come into this game as favourites despite Romania qualifying for Euro 2024 with a better record. The Romanians topped their group, thanks in part to Switzerland imploding, but they still avoided a single defeat. Ukraine reached Germany via the playoffs, but with England and Italy in their group, that’s perhaps more understandable.
When you look through the expected lineups for both teams there’s a clear difference in quality. Ukraine have a number of Premier League stars such as Mykhailo Mudryk and Oleksandr Zinchenko, as well as an attacking duo of Artem Dovbyk and Viktor Tsyhankov, who starred for Girona last season. That quality will be the difference maker and Ukraine should start their Euro 2024 campaign with three points.
Artem Dovbyk anytime goalscorer
That Girona duo of Tsyhankov and Dovbyk were instrumental in Girona’s La Liga third place finish in 2023/24, in which they combined for 32 goals and 15 assists. 24 of those goals went to Ukraine’s number nine, Dovbyk.
He’s a big, strong striker, aware of space and with a high level of finishing. If he gets chances, he’ll no doubt put one away. He’s scored 10 in 28 games for Ukraine but his form last season shows he’s just getting better and could be a star at this tournament.
Artem Dovbyk to have 2 or more shots
As well as bagging a goal we can expect Dovbyk to have multiple shots at goal. He leads the line for his country and will get plenty of chances against an inferior Romania team. If you look at his numbers in La Liga, he averaged 2.4 shots per game, and the 26-year old is likely to continue that streak here.
Mykhailo Mudryk to be fouled 1 or more times
Joining Dovbyk and Tsyhankov on the left of the front three will be Chelsea winger Mudryk. He’s been frustrating so far in London, but there’s a player in there, and he’s key to Ukraine’s hopes.
Mudryk really opens up games with his key trait, that electric pace. Against a Romania team that lacks real stardust he’ll be able to utilise that. He was fouled 1.54 times per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season, and we can expect him to get taken out by Romania here, with his speed and quick feet incredibly dangerous, especially on the counter.
Marius Marin to commit 2 or more fouls
If there’s one player on the pitch on Monday who is likely to give up multiple fouls then it’s Romania’s Marius Marin. He holds the most important position, anchoring the Romania midfield, and he’ll have to drop back to help his defence against Ukraine’s fearsome front three.
He’s also a player with a habit for giving up fouls. Last season at Pisa in Italy’s Serie B he committed two fouls per 90 minutes played. Not only that, but across 33 games played, he racked up an incredible 13 yellow cards and one red. He’s a physical player and one prone to rash challenges.
