Phil Thompson is quietly confident England can make a splash at Euro 2024 this summer but he’s not quite on the ‘it’s coming home’ hype train as Gareth Southgate’s team kick off their campaign in Gelsenkirchen.
Thommo delves into how England are shaping up ahead of their opening match of the tournament on Sunday night as they take on Serbia at the Veltins-Arena.
The Three Lions are expectant ahead of this clash, and the travelling fans will fancy a routine win over, with Denmark tipped as their main rivals for top spot in Group C.

This is a perfect fixture for England on paper, but Serbia have plenty of threats, including Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Tadic, who we all know from their Premier League days.
That defeat to Iceland has changed things slightly for England coming into Euro 2024.
Ahead of the tournament, England have been favourites, but up against a packed defence like Iceland they found it very difficult. Serbia will look at that, and go with five in defence and try to hit England on the break.
I think it’s going to be difficult for England, but Serbia only have two wins in their last six. That said, Gareth Southgate’s side only have one win in their last five.
Despite that, I do think England will have enough to win, but it will be tricky, and I’m going with England to win 3-1.
As I’m predicting England to win, I’m going for at least two different scorers, with Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka both to find the back of the net.
Kane is the player we are pinning our hopes on as England fans, and the talk of his possible injury before the Iceland game was worrying, but he is back and I fancy him to fire here.
