Phil Thompson’s back with his Euro 2024 previews for all the big games this summer, and it doesn’t get much bigger than defending champions Italy.
The Euro 2020 (in, erm, 2021) winners didn’t qualify for the last World Cup in Qatar and are in a ‘group of death’ with Spain, Croatia and opening day opponents Albania.
Thommo’s expecting a routine win in this one as the Azzurri look to begin the defence of their title in style…

I wouldn’t think this will be a banana skin for the Italians so I’d expect them to win this. It’s got to obviously go -1 -2, or even -3 in the Handicap market.
Italy’s only defeat for quite a while was that 3-1 away to England in October last year which was a little bit of revenge after that Euro 2020 final at Wembley.
Albania have had a lot of wins but they’ve all been against average teams, not sides of any great quality, and it’s quite easy to rattle off three, four, five games and go unbeaten against those types of teams.
They beat Azerbaijan 3-1 in their final friendly, so they’ll be going into this game thinking they could cause an upset – but I suspect they will defend deep.
I think once Italy score, they’ll get quite a few. I’m going for Italy to win 3-0.
