Friday, June 14: 8pm – Germany v Scotland
Euro 2024 Group A match – Munich
TV: ITV1/ STV/ RTE2

Germany (-1)

Expect Germany to get off to a flier at Euro 2024 by recording a multi-goal victory in the opening match against Scotland in Munich.

Julian Nagelsmann seems to have guided his side around a corner. In 2024, they have recorded three wins from four matches, scoring exactly two goals in each of those successes.

Given Scotland have struggled for offensive efficiency in recent games, a couple of goals for the hosts should be more than enough. Steve Clarke’s side are unlikely to generate the volume of chances they created in recent friendlies against Gibraltar and Finland, when they scored four times but should have had many more.

Another factor pointing to a comfortable home win are the four matches Scotland have played against teams in the top ten of the FIFA Rankings over the course of the last year. They have lost them all by more than a single goal. Germany are not in this bracket – they are ranked 16th – but on paper they should not be and Nagelsmann has them heading in the right direction.

Jamal Musiala to score or assist

Wildly talented Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala has had a relatively slow start to his international career, but the signs are that it is about to take off under Nagelsmann.

The 21-year-old has featured in all six of the friendly matches he has been fit for, missing a total of only 52 minutes across those encounters. Most impressively, he’s started to become a key offensive figure for Germany. In these games, he has one goal and two assists.

This tournament could be his big breakthrough on the international stage and it would be little surprise to see him at the forefront of Germany’s charge here.

John McGinn to be fouled 2+ times

Scotland are likely to be desperate for an out ball in this encounter, and John McGinn is set to provide that in a role just behind a lone striker.

The Aston Villa midfielder loves to make a nuisance of himself and is a typically busy presence at the best of times. In this type of environment, expect him to play at turbo speed, likely meaning he generates chaos with a sizeable foul count both for and against.

During qualifying, McGinn chalked up 2.47 fouls won per 90. Look for him to make a similar impact in this match.

Scotland over 2.5 cards

Among the nations that qualified for Euro 2024, Scotland rank fourth in terms of yellow cards picked up per 90 minutes in qualifying with 2.38.

While there was a limited need to get involved in battles during their route to Germany, the Scots are likely to find themselves under considerably greater tension in Munich. Clarke’s side are not particularly strong at the back, and a combination of adrenaline and simply playing superior opponents is likely to make them more rash than usual.

Allied to that, the home crowd will be exerting pressure on the match officials, making their lives more difficult.

Scotland to commit 11 or more fouls

Scotland consistently gave up a high free kick count in qualifying, making them very attractive odds to commit 11 or more fouls in this encounter.

Clarke’s team only once gave up fewer than this figure across eight qualifying matches, which was in their trip to Spain.

Scotland actually won more fouls than they gave away during the qualifying phase, yet there was far greater variability about those numbers. Nevertheless, backing Germany to win 12 or more fouls may be worth some consideration as a result.
