England v Iceland
International friendly match, Wembley Stadium, London
TV: Channel 4, Friday, 7:45pm
We’ve reached the last chance saloon. If anybody is going to sneak into Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024, England’s friendly with Iceland on Friday evening is their last chance to impress.
In reality, the boss will have already decided on his 26 players of choice, barring any late injuries, as his roster has to be submitted after the match. Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips will find a way in and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Even if players know they’ll be on the plane to Germany, they will want to force their way into the starting XI for the European Championship opener against Serbia on Sunday week. There’s still a little more to play for here than in your average friendly snooze-fest.
England -2
Iceland are responsible for arguably the most seismic result in the history of the England team, or at least the most notable of modern times. They knocked the Three Lions out of Euro 2016, which spelled the end of Roy Hodgson and he was replaced by Sam Allardyce. A pint of wine and one game later, Southgate was at the helm.
As momentous as their 2-1 win was, the Icelanders have not done anywhere near as well in England. They lost 6-1 on their first visit in 2004 and 4-0 in 2020. And while they don’t suffer many heavy defeats, they lost 3-0 to Bosnia last year, a team that offered very little against Southgate’s boys on Monday night.
With Iceland 72nd in the FIFA rankings and England likely to want to entertain the Wembley crowd, the home side should win easily. They can do so by at least three goals to overcome Paddy Power’s handicap for the second time this week.
Both Teams to Score, No
It will be much easier for the Three Lions to win by three if they keep a clean sheet. History suggests they should cruise to a shutout.
Under Southgate, England have played 14 home games against countries who were outside the top 50 in the world rankings. In only one of those matches did they concede, and while Kosovo scored three times when it happened, it means the aggregate scoreline across those games is a ridiculous 53-3.
Similarly, the English have won their previous four pre-tournament friendlies to nil. Visiting sides are rarely too bothered in games like this so select ‘no’ under Both Teams to Score.
Harry Kane to Score 2 or More Goals
It’s hard to know who Southgate will select here. He has led England into summer tournaments twice before. In the second of the two warm-up games, he made 10 and nine changes respectively from the first friendly.
Most of the starters from the 3-0 win over Bosnia should be on the bench for this one then. We know Harry Kane will be brought in to help build his fitness, but it’s guesswork beyond that.
Why would you look beyond this season’s top scorer in Europe’s big five leagues when picking a goal scorer though? Kane will do for me, Paddy.
And if he can score once, he can probably net twice. Kane has done so in two of his last three home starts for England and in three of the last eight. Only Kylian Mbappe scored braces or better in more club games this season, so Iceland should be prepared for Kane to score two or more goals.
7 or more England Corners
Matches at Wembley don’t feature many corners. There have been only two England games with more than 10 in the Three Lions’ previous 16 fixtures at the national stadium.
However, the low total is usually due to the visiting side recording very few. Team Southgate have averaged 6.8 corners in their last 10 friendlies at Wembley and only fewer than six on two occasions.
England also had at least seven corners in all of their three meetings with Iceland in the last eight years, so there’s no reason to think they won’t reach that mark again.
2 or more Iceland Cards
There’s a similar issue with cards, namely a lack of them when England are plying their trade in the HA9 postcode. Their last 12 Wembley friendlies averaged just 2.1 bookings, with a 1-0 win over Australia last October the only one of them with more than three yellow cards.
But that’s due to the Three Lions rarely collecting many. Prior to the recent draw with Belgium, it had been eight non-competitive matches at Wembley since England received more yellow cards than the visitors, and even then, the total was only 2-1 against the Belgians.
In their three vaguely recent clashes with the English, Iceland collected two or more yellow cards every time and a red card twice. With nine bookings across two recent qualifying matches with Portugal too, the away team on Friday should receive two or more cards easily enough.
