Euro 2024 Betting Tips

Euro 2024 Winner: France

Euro 2024 Finalists: France and Portugal

England’s elimination stage: Semi finals

Euro 2024 Golden Boot: Harry Kane

International football is always tricky to predict, with teams only playing about 10 games a year up against a wide variety of opposition.

There will be 24 countries with 26-man squads playing a total of 51 matches in Germany from June 14 to July 14.

So, when it comes to placing a bet, there’s a hell of a lot of options and a minefield of possibilities, but Paddy has got you covered with a full array of Euro 2024 odds.

Tournament Winner: France

England are favourites to win Euro 2024. Hold the phone, really? Yeah.

The Three Lions lead the market ahead of France, Germany, Spain and Portugal. Having got to the Euro 2020 final and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, they have recent pedigree for going deep in tournaments. But England have also needed home advantage and/or a kind draw to do well in the past.

While they were disappointing at the previous edition of this competition, France have been to the final of three of the last four major tournaments. They are also the top ranked UEFA side in the FIFA rankings, and the higher rated team has won five of the seven finals since the rankings began.

Name The Finalists: France v Portugal

This is where Paddy’s printable wallchart comes into its own as we plot a path to the final.

Top of the tree in the ‘Name The Finalists’ market is England v Germany, followed by France v Germany.

A closer look at the draw helps explain why the top two in the outright market are not combining to be the favourite option here. If England and France win their groups, as they are odds-on to do, they are on track to meet in the semi-finals and can’t possibly meet in the final.

The seeding implies one of those sides will face the winner of Group A (in which Germany are favourites), B (Spain) or F (Portugal) in the final.

It’s been 40 years since a host nation won the competition, for starters. As for Spain, they are in the closest Euro 2024 has to a group of death, alongside Italy and Croatia. They should get through but winning that section is far from guaranteed.

The 2016 champions Portugal look a good choice here. They were the best team in qualifying, and the draw implies they shouldn’t have to meet another group winner until the semis. The Portuguese have been to two of the last five finals and can make it three from six.

England stage of elimination: Semi-finals

Following the above thinking on how the tournament will play out for England, they will make it through to the knockout stages, but a semi-final clash with France is on the horizon. Southgate’s team were knocked out of the 2022 World Cup by Les Bleus at the quarter-final hurdle and the French could end the English dream once again.

Dark Horse Pick: Hungary to reach the quarter-finals

What constitutes a dark horse? Let’s think about it while we listen to Black Beauty.

Greece proved in 2004 that a long shot can win the tournament, so anything is possible. With the multiple markets on offer, you don’t have to aim that high – you’d have got decent odds for Denmark reaching the semi-finals last time out, or Wales making the last four at Euro 2016.

You can also bet on a team to reach the quarter-finals. The runners-up from groups A and B as well as D and E are paired together in the Round of 16, so should have a relatively easy first knockout match to reach the last eight.

If the odds prove correct, these matches will be Switzerland v Italy and Netherlands v Ukraine. The Dutch are the best selection as they won’t fear any team from Group E, but there are better odds available.

Willi Orban, hungary, june 2024

Hungary appear to be the best dark horse in this market. Despite seeing their long unbeaten run ended by the might of John O’Shea’s Ireland, and being placed in Group A with Germany, they won’t fear Switzerland or Scotland and there could be value in backing them to reach the quarter-finals.

How will Scotland get on?

Speaking of Scotland, could Euro 2024 finally be the tournament where they break their knockout phase duck? The Scots have been to eight World Cups and three European Championships and went out at the group stage every time.

History is against them and so is their form. After a 3-0 win over the might of Cyprus in September, Scotland drew two and lost three of their five matches over the rest of 2023/24.

They have lost their last three games against Germany and a previous meeting with Switzerland. While they won a friendly against Hungary in 2018, Scotland were 18 places above them in the world rankings at that point, whereas they are 13 below now. Steve Clarke’s side look a good bet to finish fourth in their group.

Golden Boot Winner: Harry Kane

If you’re betting on player awards at the European Championships, it’s vital to remember a couple of facts.

Most importantly, the top scorer has only been crowned as Player of the Tournament once, with Antoine Griezmann completing the double in 2016. The UEFA panel like midfielders for the latter award, with Zinedine Zidane, Xavi and Andres Iniesta among previous winners, though Gianluigi Donnarumma took the gong at Euro 2020.

You also need to remember that the Player of the Tournament is named after the final, so it will likely be someone from the winning nation, or at least a finalist. It always has been before.

Harry Kane is the only realistic competition for top scorer, not least because he got the most goals of any player in Europe’s big five leagues this season, but he also takes the crazy number of penalties which England mysteriously get.

Player of the Tournament: Kylian Mbappe

For Player of the Tournament, Toni Kroos could be a value selection. He retires after Euro 2024 and award givers love a bit of sentimentality. But he would need Germany to reach the final, which doesn’t feel likely given their form over the last year or so.

If you agree that France will win Euro 2024, Kylian Mbappe would be a good option for this bet. He’s also the favourite in this market, and the Golden Boot, ahead of Kane for the former and Jude Bellingham for the latter.
