The pain from defeat to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2020 final, and the quarter-final exit to France at the 2022 World Cup will still be fresh in the memory of Gareth Southgate and co as they look to finally bring some silverware back with them this summer.
The Three Lions squad is bursting with talent, with Premier League Player of the Year Phil Foden and Premier League Young Player of the Year Cole Palmer both vying for a place in the starting 11, and not forgetting European Golden Shoe winner Harry Kane and La Liga Player of the Year, and Champions League winner, Jude Bellingham.
Despite all this, the cloud of England’s failures in the last 68 years still looms large.
With a favourable draw in the group stage, Southgate’s side should go far. But will they falter again when they face one of the big boys in the knockout stages?
MANAGER: Gareth Southgate
CAPTAIN: Harry Kane will lead the Three Lions in the country of his club, Bayern Munich. Can he finally break his apparent trophy curse after winning nothing at club level this season?
STAR PLAYER: Jude Bellingham has emerged as a star at Real Madrid this season, playing a huge part in them resecuring the La Liga title and going all the way in the Champions League. He is a key component to Southgate’s midfield, contributing in attack and defence. England will go far if the former Birmingham boy is at his best.
HOW THEY GOT THERE: England topped Group C in qualifying ahead of Italy, Ukraine, North Macedonia, and Malta. The Three Lions went unbeaten winning six and drawing two.
HOW WILL THEY DO: The Three Lions will be pleased with their draw, with their group-stage opponents all relatively beatable. Denmark will likely provide the toughest block against them topping the group. If they do come out in first place they’ll face a third-place finisher in the Last 16. If they win that and their quarter-final, France could lie in wait in the semis.
BEST BET: England arrive in Germany as favourites to win the whole thing and it is unlikely that won’t at least go deep in the tournament. With a favourable group draw on their side and the potential to avoid all the massive names until the semi-final, it is a fair shout to back England to win Euro 2024.
