Can England finally end their 48 years of hurt?
England can definitely win this tournament and they’ve arguably never been in a better position to do so. Their squad is filled with talent playing for some of the world’s best clubs and are worthy favourites.
So why won’t they win it?
There are clear problems in terms of formation and personnel. First of all, Gareth Southgate has picked only one recognised left-back in Luke Shaw, who hasn’t played a competitive football game since February, leaving Kieran Trippier as their likely starter. He is experienced at the highest level but he’s not an out-and-out left-back and has suffered from injuries this season.
In terms of formation, whoever plays in the sitting role is a cause for concern. Declan Rice might fill that role but that will restrict him going forward, something he excelled at this season for Arsenal. Otherwise, it could be Trent Alexander-Arnold or Kobbie Mainoo, both of whom are inexperienced in either that position or at this level.
Despite all this, if England win their group, they’ll play one of the 3rd placed sides, followed by Croatia or Italy in the quarter finals, both of which are very winnable games for this squad. Then it would be France in the semis and if they can advance, that would then leave a final against rivals Germany looking very possible. That’s why I’m looking to back them to reach the last four at the very least.
Are Denmark or Serbia best placed to challenge England for top spot in the group?
Looking at Denmark, it’s clear that they will struggle to replicate their performance of reaching the semis at Euro 2020. Their qualifying campaign was unconvincing, with them losing 3-2 to Kazakhstan, despite leading by two goals, and only beating San Marino 2-1 after letting the minnows equalise.
One potential bright spot will be Rasmus Hojlund who finished as top scorer in their group with seven goals and came into some form for Man Utd at the end of the season. He will be absolutely key.
As for Serbia, they got through their group easily enough but were beaten home and away by Hungary despite having more chances and possession. With players like Aleksandar Mitrovic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Filip Kostic all at their peak, you’d have to feel this might be their last chance at having success at a major championship.
They have often flattered to deceive in recent years, with only two wins in their last three World Cup appearances and they were particularly poor in the 2022 World Cup.

Are Slovenia anything more than also rans?
Thankfully, we have an excellent form guide for Slovenia as they were in Denmark’s qualification group, ending up on the same number of points, but losing on head-to-head record as the Danes took four points from their two games.
Unfortunately, Slovenia don’t have the same stars in their squad as the other teams in this group, with the exception of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, who scored five goals in qualifying and 14 in the Bundesliga this season. Much of the attacking threat will rest on his shoulders.
I wouldn’t overlook them to get out of the group.
Euro 2024 Group C Betting Tips
As outlined above, England have a reasonable path through the tournament and they are fancied to get there. If they do reach that stage, England to be eliminated in the semi-finals would be worth backing as they may struggle against France.
With England clear favourites to win the group, there’s some value siding with the underdogs Slovenia here. If they can repeat their draw with Denmark from the qualification group and beat local rivals Serbia that would be enough to get through.
For their final game against England, who might already have qualified by then, Slovenia would have a decent chance of nicking a draw and could even clinch second place.
