Hungary Euro 2024 squad preview: Skipper Szoboszlai crucial to success

They went unbeaten in qualification but can they follow that up on the big stage?

Hungary weren’t in action at the Qatar World Cup in 2022 and their last showing at the Euros back in 2021 saw them fail to get out of the group stage, chalking up just two points.

In fairness, they were in a group of death with Portugal, Germany and France, so actually losing just once (to the former), and drawing with the other two, wasn’t as bad as that record first appears.

Italian Marco Rossi loves his job as manager so much he’s both written a book about it and he’s also taken Hungarian citizenship where the President of the country was in attendance.

You can’t fault his commitment, but does he have the nous to get Hungary past the group stage at Euro 2024? Let’s take a look…

MANAGER: Marco Rossi

CAPTAIN: Dominik Szoboszlai. The Liverpool midfielder has skippered the side since the beginning of the 2022/23 season while he was at RB Leipzig.

STAR PLAYER: It’s that man Szoboszlai again. With 12 goals over his 40 appearances, he’s by far the most threatening player in attack. Always keen to have a shot, he’s going to be firing from range when he gets sniff.

HOW THEY GOT THERE: Rossi’s side finished top of a kind-looking Group G in qualification, beating Serbia twice, Montenegro, Lithuania and Bulgaria once each and then drawing with those final three in the reverse fixtures. Goals weren’t exactly aplenty however, scoring just 16 over those eight games.

HOW WILL THEY DO: Compared to their Group A opponents, FIFA rank Hungary a whole 13 places above Scotland, but seven behind Switzerland and 10 behind Germany.

Their biggest problem will be a lack of experience. Too many of their defenders and midfielders play in low-ranked leagues so could struggle on the bigger stage. The aforementioned lack of goals could be a problem too.

BEST BET: Hungary beat England in the Nations League and they’ll fancy their chances of getting at least a win and a draw in Group A, most likely against Scotland and Switzerland. Szoboszlai will need to be a constant attacking threat if they are to progress but we’re on Hungary Stage of Elimination: Round of 16.
