Can Germany go all the way?

Never write off the Germans is a cliché for a good reason and looking at their squad for this tournament and their recent victories against France and The Netherlands, you can’t discount them.

Julian Nagelsmann has been able to adapt the team quickly after Hansi Flick’s sacking and with form players throughout such as Kai Havertz and Niclas Fullkrug, they should get to at least the quarters.

That’s where they would probably face a young Spain team, followed by either Portugal or the Netherlands so based on that, I’m looking to back them to reach the final.

‌How will Scotland fare?

After beating Spain and Norway in qualification, Scotland would have been filled with optimism coming into the summer. However, more recent convincing defeats to The Netherlands, France and England have shown there are weaknesses in defence.

Additionally, with injuries to Nathan Patterson and Aaron Hickey to contend with, there’s a clear weakness at right wing-back, especially with the 3-5-2 formation that’s been central to Steve Clarke’s success. With James Forrest or uncapped Ross McCrorie likely to deputise there, you can expect Scotland’s opposition to target that area.

In midfield however, Scotland are packed with talent with Billy Gilmour and Callum McGregor holding the midfield and that will give John McGinn and Scott McTominay license to go forward and get the goals, so look to back those latter two to be Scotland’s top scorers.

‌Which of Switzerland or Hungary should Scotland fear most as rivals for a last 16 spot?

While Switzerland have had decent successes in tournaments recently, they struggled in qualifying with coach Murat Yakin having crisis talks with key players and just about keeping his job. This was all down to a run of one win in eight games and that was against lowly Andorra.

With this in mind, Switzerland will struggle against a well organised and efficient Hungary, who beat England in the Nations League home and away, and were unbeaten in their qualification group. Coach Marco Rossi has now been in charge for six years and has seen them grow from strength to strength.

Rossi recently talked about his tactical approach with Dominik Szoboszlai having a free role, so expect to see the Liverpool midfielder on the ball a lot in their games. He was also joint top scorer in qualifying with four goals and is their designated penalty taker, so look to back him for anytime scorer in all three group games.

Euro 2024 Group A Betting Tips

With Scotland’s weaknesses, they are rightfully favourites in the betting to finish bottom of this group. As previously mentioned, they’re weak at right wing back but also up front with Lyndon Dykes likely to start there. The QPR striker only scored seven club goals across all competitions and with the quality of some of the defences in this group, Scotland will probably exit early.

That means Hungary are the bet in this group, with four points likely to be enough to qualify for next stage. If they are able to win against the Swiss and the Scots, that will be enough for second place and maybe even challenge Germany.
