Euro 2024 is on the horizon and kick-off in the group stages is imminent.

Who will comfortably finish top and secure comfortable passage to the knockouts? Who will finish third and face the anxious wait if their points tally is enough to progress? And who will finish bottom of the pile and go straight home?

We look at all those possibilities in Group D as our trader provides his best tips for France, Netherlands, Austria, and Poland.

Can France go all the way?

There’s no doubting France can go all the way. They have a serious squad of players, headed up of course by Kylian Mbappe.

They’re second favourites two weeks out from the tournament behind England, and they’ve got that winning mentality having been there and done it.

It’s a young squad coming into their prime, and there is no reason they can’t go all the way.

Are Netherlands dark horses or a last 16 exit waiting to happen?

I think they have absolutely no chance! There’s arguably three players that might get into England or France’s squad, never mind the starting line-up, and that’s Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake and Xavi Simons.

They lack quality in midfield with ageing players like Gini Wijnaldum, and Cody Gakpo, whether he plays in in there or up front, has struggled at Liverpool this year.

They have a poor squad. Their No.9 is Wout Weghorst! I think they are a bad option at around 18/1 and I wouldn’t back them with a free bet. They may not even make it out of the group.

Who of Austria or Poland are best placed to qualify for the last 16?

Poland of course have Robert Lewandowski, who is probably going into his last Euros – he’ll be out to prove a point. I was quite surprised Matty Cash was left at home after Aston Villa’s impressive season, although he has struggled with injuries.

It’s Austria where all the value lies. They’ve lost just one of their last 14 games – that defeat was 3-2 against Belgium, who they only finished a point behind in qualifying. But they’ve had some good wins, beating Turkey 6-1 and Germany 2-0.

Since a poor end to 2022 in a tricky Nations League group they’ve been on a great run under manager Ralf Rangnick and with the experience of Marko Arnautovic and Freiburg frontman Michael Gregoritsch – who has 30 goals in 70 games for his country, and at the age of 30 is coming into his prime – can get on the scoresheet.

He’s one who could be worth backing each-way in the Top Goalscorer market because I think they may go far. If he goes well with two or three in the group stage he could pick up a place there.

Euro 2024 Group D Betting Tips

As mentioned above, I’m all against the Dutch, and France look very strong. The odds of them winning the group look fair.

Austria to qualify from the group looks like a cracking bet, but for a pinch more value, I’m looking at Group D runner-up Austria as my best bet.

If you fancy something a little longer in odds, it could be worth a nibble on the Netherlands To Finish Bottom of the Group.
