League Two Winners: MK Dons
Championship Winners: Burnley
In each of the last four Championship seasons, the eventual champion was a team that was relegated from the Premier League the season before. There is every chance this trend continues into 2024/25 and Burnley do appear best placed to serve up an immediate return to the top-flight.
Yes, Vincent Kompany has left for Bayern Munich, but whoever is coming in will immediately inherit a squad amongst the best in the division. Naturally the incoming boss will also want to add his own players to the roster and having the financial backing of parachute payments and ambitious owners means money won’t be much of an issue.
In the case of the other relegated clubs, Sheffield United and Luton, there are more unknowns surrounding them. The Blades are set to undergo quite a significant change in personnel and it shouldn’t be assumed they’ll get it right.
The Hatters impressed and surprised many last season but coming down will be a bit of a reality check and they’ve suddenly become one of the big dogs in the Championship. No longer can they play the underdog card, plus they’re also likely to lose key players, and knowing their financial model it isn’t expected they’ll splash out big time on new additions.
Burnley also still retain quite a significant clout of players that was so successful in winning this league two seasons ago and that could be telling in those final months when the pressure really intensifies.
League One Winners: Rotherham
Rotherham have wasted no time whatsoever as they look to build a team capable of producing an instant return to the Championship. With Steve Evans at the helm, this is undoubtedly a team that will be competing at the top end of the table.
They have become something of a ‘yo-yo club’ between the two leagues, so they can be relied upon to make an impression at this level. Bringing Evans back looks to be a real masterstroke by Chairman Tony Stewart as it has really galvanised the club following what was a disastrous 2023/24 campaign where they finished rock bottom.
There is life in the club again and the fans are now excited about what could be to come as opposed to fearing a hangover from the previous season. Already, proven top-end League One players in the form of Jonson Clarke-Harris, Reece James, Sean Raggett, and Joe Rafferty have signed up and they certainly haven’t come to ponder around mid-table or really even the play-offs.
This adds to an already strong nucleus of this team and vibes are strong of The Millers certainly competing near the top of the table. The fact they’ve done big business prior to returning to pre-season training gives them a big advantage in preparing for the season. Discounting Rotherham would be a big mistake.
League Two Winners: MK Dons
MK Dons have achieved a top-four finish in their last two campaigns at League Two level, all since the beginning of 2018. Therefore, they’re often a decent and reliable bet to compete near the top of the table. They also made the League One play-offs as recently as two years ago. Their setback in the League Two play-offs this time around against Crawley was a bit of a freak, but it’ll drive them on to win promotion this time around.
Newly promoted Chesterfield are deemed the only side more likely to win League Two based on the odds, and those odds really should be flipped around. MK Dons are proven at this level and if they can retain the likes of Max Dean then it’ll only aid their cause.
The league has a more open feel about it this time around and if Chesterfield and Carlisle, based on the odds, are to be their main competition then there should be some quiet confidence behind Mike Williamson’s side. He’ll have his first pre-season since taking charge this time around as he only took charge from 14 league games onwards last season. Plus, the addition of Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, fresh off of assisting Stockport to win promotion out of League Two, is a signal of intent ahead of what is primed to be a successful season for MK Dons.
