Football Tips: Our 5 Europa League final Super Sub picks

Paddy's tipster Sam Farley has five Super Sub shouts for Wednesday's showdown.

Wednesday night features a blockbuster Europa League final between Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta. The Italians have won seven of their last nine games and face Xabi Alonso’s Bundesliga champions who have gone the whole season unbeaten with just two matches to go.

Ahead of this showdown in Dublin, we have Bet Builder based purely on Paddy’s new Super Sub promotion. What’s that you say? Well, put simply if the player you’ve had a punt on comes off,  the bet carries over to the new player replacing them.

There are five legs that all offer value as singles but you can also bundle them together in a tasty Bet Builder.

Wednesday 8pm: Bayer Leverkusen v Atalanta
UEFA Europa League final match at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin
TV: TNT Sports 1

Florian Wirtz to score or assist

Florian Wirtz has long been the ‘next big thing’ in German football, coveted by Europe’s top clubs, but this season has been when he’s cemented his status as Germany’s best attacking talent.

He’s had another brilliant campaign, with 11 goals and 11 assists in 32 Bundesliga appearances this season. He’s been equally as dangerous in Europe with four goals and four assists in his 10 Europa League games. His passing is exceptional, his shooting is brilliant and his ability to find space is top class. He’s Leverkusen’s main man, and if they’re to win, which they should, Wirtz will be integral.

Victor Boniface to score

If it wasn’t for an abductor injury that sidelined him for 14 Leverkusen games, and ruled him out of the Africa Cup of Nations, we might be lauding Victor Boniface as one of Europe’s best strikers. Despite being out for three months he has 14 Bundesliga goals in 23 appearances and five more in his seven Europa League games.

He comes into this game in red hot form, after scoring in each of his previous three games. Leverkusen have a lot of attacking talent but it’s Boniface who carries the highest goal threat and he’ll fancy his chances of scoring here.

Ederson to be shown a card

Playing against Leverkusen’s midfield is no joke and it’s Ederson who will be tasked with protecting the Atalanta backline. The Brazilian is great at breaking up play but he’ll have to deal with the movement of Wirtz and Amine Adil, who will be looking to exploit any space between midfield and defence.

Ederson has an ability to get booked in high-pressure games, such as their last Europa League match, the second leg win over Marseille. With eight yellow cards in Serie A this season, the second most in the Atalanta team, behind the injured Marten de Roon, there’s a high chance we’ll see Ederson get his name in Istvan Kovacs’ notebook. The Romanian referee has been card-happy in Europe averaging 5.5 yellows per game in the Champions League, as well as giving out eight yellows in his one Europa League clash this season.

Jeremie Frimpong to commit 1 or more fouls

Attacking wingbacks are an integral part of Alonso’s system at Leverkusen and while we’re mostly hearing about Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo’s forays in the opposition half, they are also going to be needed defensively. With that in mind, we’re going to back Frimpong to commit at least one foul here.

The Dutchman has seven yellow cards to his name this season, and despite not being a dirty player he has given up 21 fouls in 31 Bundesliga games, an average of 0.83 per game. His six fouls in nine Europa League games has seen that average rise to 0.96 fouls per game, and given the sheer size of this game it only increases the chances of seeing him commit a foul.

Charles De Ketelaere to have 1 or more shots on target

Our final bet is for Atalanta’s Charles De Ketelaere to have one or more shots on target. The young Belgian has started 23 of their Serie A games this year, and came off the bench in 10. He’s managed to hit double figures for goals, which shows the threat he can add, and he should start, just like he did in both of Atalanta’s semi final legs.

He comes into this with three goals in his last three games, including a goal in just 45 minutes against Lecce at the weekend. In the league this season he’s averaged 1.14 shots on target per 90 minutes played, not only that, but in Europe he’s had eight shots on target in 10 appearances, with 1.3 shots on target per 90 minutes.
