It all comes down to this. Manchester City and Arsenal are at home to West Ham and Everton respectively on the final day, two teams so infused with the spirit of David Moyes that they won’t put up much of a fight. Assuming both collect three points, City’s game at Tottenham will determine whether it is they or the Gunners who win the league this season. Most neutrals will hope Arsenal prevail, though some will appreciate the dark comedy of the Premier League handing the trophy to the Cityzens while they face 115 charges.
But there’s nothing neutral about Spurs fans when it comes to their north London rivals, even if they retain an interest in a top-four place (at the time of writing; an Aston Villa win over Liverpool on Monday night would end that).
Everything points to a City win here, but which players are going to make it happen? You can bet on who you think will score, assist, have shots and efforts on target, commit fouls or be fouled and receive a card.
These things are tough to predict, but Paddy Power has made it a little easier with its Super Sub offer. With the quality in City’s squad, this likely involves swopping one £60m+ footballer for another, not bad, eh? Let’s look at some of the markets and who might be worth selecting for this title-deciding clash.
Dejan Kulusevski to be Fouled 1 or more Times
Here’s a stat which might surprise you: Tottenham have suffered more fouls than any other team in the Premier League this season. Less strange is that Manchester City have committed the fewest, as their holding midfielders from Fernandinho through Rodri seem to have been granted immunity from referees over the years.
This has been a foul-heavy fixture at times, with 32 in 2020 and 33 last season when the Premier League average is around 22 per game. Match referee Chris Kavanagh tends to whistle less often than his peers, but remember we only need a player to commit or suffer one for our bet to succeed.
In four of the six meetings at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, City have committed more fouls. As we know Ange Postecoglou’s precious princes suffer a lot, this looks the way to go.
The obvious choice to be fouled is James Maddison, as that has occurred in every league appearance he has made this season. Paddy’s no mug though, and the skinny odds reflect that. Let’s take Dejan Kulusevski instead. He has been impeded in almost two-thirds of his league starts and was the joint-most fouled player in the FA Cup meeting in January.
Kyle Walker to Commit 1 or more Fouls
Despite what I said earlier, Rodri is the City man who has committed fouls in the highest proportion of his league appearances in 2023/24. The value selection, though, is Kyle Walker. He’s third in the club standings for this stat, has been penalised in more away games than at the Etihad and often has to use his pace to end opposition counters by fair means or foul.
Rodrigo Bentancur to be Shown a Card
While Kavanagh generally keeps his cards in his pocket, this head-to-head tends to feature plenty of bookings. The two previous meetings this season both saw at least seven yellow cards, and although that’s extreme, the last eight meetings saw an average of 4.4 and a minimum of three.
This market should require less thought than the fouls one. Who has the most red cards for either side in the 2023/24 Premier League? Yves Bissouma. And the most yellows? Yves Bissouma.
Unfortunately for us, a knee injury means he’s done for 2023/24. However, his replacement is a great pick here. In Bissouma’s absence, Rodrigo Bentancur should get the nod from Ange. Among players with at least as many Premier League minutes this season, only Nicolo Zaniolo has received a yellow card more often than the Uruguayan. Back Bissouma’s buddy Bentancur being booked.
Rodri to have 1 or more Shots on Target
It’s possible to bet on a player to have a shot, but the odds are always very skinny. You’ll get a much better price if you look at efforts on target.
Take the league meetings between these teams in the last five seasons, for instance. They averaged 26.4 shots and 8.6 on target. It’s obviously harder to pick someone for the latter, but success will be worth your while.
Of course, if you choose Erling Haaland, it won’t be. A smarter pick would be that man Rodri. He hasn’t struck a shot on target in as many games as Haaland, Phil Foden or Julian Alvarez, but he’s done it nine times on the road, a tally only Heung-min Son has bettered for Tottenham at home.
The Spaniard tends to play the whole match in big games, though with a title sealer at the end of the week, there is a possibility that the Super Sub will come into play.
