West Brom v Southampton
Championship Play-Off Semi-Final at the Hawthorns, West Bromwich
TV: Sky Sports Main Event & Football, Sunday 2:15pm
Southampton and Draw
Southampton somewhat took their foot off the gas for a period when their automatic promotion charge realistically ended, allowing Russell Martin to tinker with his team selection. He went full strength for the final day win away at Leeds however, which could be a sign of things to come. Martin utilised that clash as something of a play-off trial run ahead of facing a West Brom side they possess a 100% record against this season.
West Brom stumbled their way over the line in making the top six. The Baggies had been quite comfortable in those spots for a good while, but still needed a final-day victory over mid-table Preston to seal the deal. That was only their second win in eight, plus they’ve achieved only four out of a possible 14 clean sheets since Southampton last defeated them on February 16th.
Adam Armstrong to Score or Assist
A surprising omission from the Championship Team of the Season was Saints forward Adam Armstrong. Although a striker by trade, the 27-year-old has played long spells in a wide role, amassing 34 goals involvements, 21 goals, and 13 assists, in league action.
The former Blackburn Rovers attacker is very much the first name on Martin’s team sheet. He did endure more of a quiet spell over the previous month or so but was back in the goals at Elland Road last weekend. That match was huge for Leeds as it was for Southampton too and it really will have been a great preparation for their trip to The Hawthorns, especially for Armstrong.
He is a big game player, proven by the fact he has netted against the likes of Leeds (twice), Ipswich, Norwich (twice), and even West Brom back in November.
Okay Yokuslu to Commit 2 or more Fouls
One player who is very much the glue that keeps the structure of this WBA team together is defensive midfielder Okay Yokuslu, who has been a virtual ever-present across the campaign. He oversees plenty from his area of the pitch and will often drop deep to contribute to building from the back, meaning he’ll receive the ball under pressure a lot of the time.
Out of possession, he can also morph into more of a central defensive role, too. In the West Brom squad, he is ranked joint-third for most cards, proving he isn’t afraid to get stuck in. He averages a foul a game over the league season, however that average has crept up to 1.50 over his previous 12 appearances. Also, in 50% of them, he has committed two or more fouls.
Jack Stephens to be Fouled 1 or more Times
Jack Stephens is something of a favourite of manager Russell Martin and has wrestled his way back into the team recently. He is predominantly a centre back, however, he has found himself in either the full back role or even in midfield at times this season. Where he starts this play-off match isn’t for certain, but he should play.
No doubt, the Saints will build up from the back here as they always do, so Stephens will see plenty of the ball. This is a big reason why he has been fouled more in recent times. Stephens has been on the receiving end of a foul in three of the previous five fixtures in which he has started.
West Brom may be ranked bottom of the Championship based upon the number of fouls given away but anything goes in the Play-offs and they’re matches like no other. Also, Southampton are fifth-highest fouled team in the league.
