PSG v Dortmund (Agg: 0:1)
Champions League semifinal match at the Parc des Princes
TV: TNT Sports, Tuesday, 8pm
PSG face off against Borussia Dortmund in Tuesday night’s Champions League semifinal trailing 1-0. Many will make PSG favourites to be appearing at the final in Wembley on June 1st but they’re going to have to beat Dortmund first. We’ve gone into the stats and form of both squads to find some value in Paddy’s Super Sub markets.
If you’re unfamiliar with PP’s Super Sub offer, you can read more about it here but here’s the basics: if you back a player in certain markets and he’s substituted, your pick is transferred to the oncoming player.
Mats Hummels to Commit 1 or more Fouls
Dortmund were almost fantastic last week in their 1-0 triumph over PSG. We’re saying ‘almost’ because they missed a ton of chances they really should have been putting away and PSG came very, very close to scoring on multiple occasions. However, it was still a great win for Edin Terzic’s side.
At times they were up under the cosh last Wednesday and we’re likely to see that for longer periods at the Parc des Princes. PSG will also be fresher seeing as they didn’t play over the weekend while Dortmund trounced Augsburg 5-1 on Saturday.
PSG manager Luis Enrique really shouldn’t have played with Kylian Mbappe in the middle and all the indicators point at him going with Mbappe on the wing with Ousmane Dembele on the other and Goncalo Ramos in the middle. The wiley Mats Hummels is going to be involved in quite a bit of the action here and while he played out of his skin last weekend, it’s not hard to see him committing at least one foul against such a fierce trio of attackers.
Julian Brandt to have 1 or more Shots
Niclas Fullkrug was in full-on beast mode last week in front of the home crowd but he’s been the object of much frustration since joining BVB from Werder Bremen in 2023 as he can be a tad wasteful with chances. No doubt he’ll eke out a chance or two here but his shots stats vs his shots-on-target stats means we should look elsewhere for value.
Jadon Sancho showed the world he’s incredibly good at football when given the freedom to play last week too but he enjoyed a little too much freedom against PSG’s Nuno Mendes who put in a truly awful performance. Sancho won’t be given such freedom this week.
Julian Brandt though had three shots against the Parisians last week and the way this game should play out we should see Sancho and Karim Adeyemi again targeting Fullkrug, or getting the ball inside to Brandt, who has some rather high odds for landing one on target here.
Kylian Mbappe First Goalscorer
It was reported in the French newspaper L’Équipe following the game that the aforementioned Ramos wasn’t brought on because Mbappe wouldn’t have helped out the Sancho-afflicted Mendes on the right side of the park. PSG are a goal down now though so Enrique must find a solution that will allow Mbappe to get on the ball and attack. He’ll most certainly have come up with something over the last few days.
Mbappe has a good record against Dortmund, scoring four in seven previous appearances, and over his last 10 home Champions League games has scored a whopping 10 goals and opened the scoring in six of those matches. Value would certainly seem to be on our side in backing him to yet again open the scoring here.
