Birmingham v Norwich – Under 2.5 Goals
Birmingham realistically need to win to stand a chance of survival and hope other results go for them. A draw is not likely to be enough. As for Norwich, a point or more makes their play-off place 100% certain, but the strong likelihood is they end the day in the play-offs regardless, but won’t want to take that chance.
With that being the case, quite a tense and nervy affair is likely to materialise at St Andrews. All of the pressure really is on the home side here, knowing they pretty much need the three points. However, their vulnerability is present for all to see, especially having won only twice in 13.
This is a Birmingham team that has scored only eight goals over their previous 11 league games. Also, they have a 36% failing to score ratio in league action, whilst Norwich have won only two in nine on the road, so they too aren’t the most reliable here.
Plymouth v Hull – Over 2.5 Goals
The situation for Plymouth is simple in the sense that they must win to guarantee survival. Anything less and they are anxiously checking to see how Birmingham got on against Norwich. Hull do still retain play-off aspirations but they have to win and then hope for favours, too.
Goal difference could also become quite key in the case of Hull. It is therefore in their best interests to go for it here. The fact they’ve netted three goals in each of their last two indicates more of a gung-ho approach and they have to continue this ultra-offensive style. Given the attacking quality they possess and the fact they’ve claimed only five away clean sheets again suggests goals are probable.
Plymouth won’t surely want to risk playing for a point, plus, the fact Hull must win too will afford them more spaces to penetrate going forward. This game is a top-ten battle in terms of Championship games finishing with three or more goals and the circumstances dictates the form book should play true.
Sunderland v Sheffield Wednesday – Sheff Wed to Win
Although sitting fifth from bottom and still in with a chance of being relegated, Sheffield Wednesday is a really positive place right now. They only recently just stepped out of the bottom-three for the first time since August and their current five-match unbeaten run is one major reason why. They need a point to confirm survival, yet the formbook suggests all three is not without hope.
They make the journey to a Sunderland side that has wanted the season to end for some time. Their play-off dream finished a while back and a run of two wins in 14 suggests they need the summer to come quickly to allow them to rebuild under a new manager. This is a team struggling for goals; proved by the fact they’ve netted six goals over their previous 11 games.
When that is compared with Wednesday, who have scored six goals alone over their last two fixtures, it tells a story. The away side enter the game a little nervous because of the situation but not necessarily fearful as they’re ultimately in great form compared to Sunderland.
West Brom v Preston – West Brom to Win
West Brom have been in control of a play-off place for many months now but three defeats in a row leaves them battling to get over the top-six line on the final day. Fortunately for them, they’re facing a Preston outfit that is consigned to mid-table and the way they performed versus Leicester on Monday suggests they are maybe more focused on their upcoming holidays.
Carlos Corberán is a passionate coach and he’ll suitable fire up his WBA players to get back on track. The Baggies have only dropped points twice at home to top-half clubs and maybe they needed those defeats to get them focused ahead of what is to come.
As mentioned, Preston did not really lay a glove on and if they cannot get up for that match then facing a motivated West Brom away is an occasion they could do without. Ryan Lowe’s side are winless playing away to those in the top-six; drawing one and losing four. Taking that into account and the fact Preston have virtually clocked off for the season then it all points to a home victory.
