Chelsea v Spurs
Premier League match at Stamford Bridge, London
TV: Sky Sports Premier League, Main Event, Thursday, 7:30pm
Chelsea face off against Spurs on Thursday night in what should be a fascinating showdown where the Blues would love nothing more than to put a dent in Ange Postecoglou’s hopes of finishing in the Top 4. We’ve gone deep into the Paddy Power Super Sub markets to find some value picks.
If you’re unfamiliar with PP’s Super Sub offer, you can read more about it here but here’s the basics: if you back a player in certain markets and he’s substituted, your pick is transferred to the oncoming player. Bosh!
Cole Palmer to Score
Cole Palmer returned to action following a short illness in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw away to Aston Villa last Saturday. The former Man City man took six shots on the night, only one of which was on target and he finished with an xG of 0.61.
Palmer has been, by a country mile, Chelsea’s best player this season, scoring 20 Premier League goals and creating nine and scoring another three in cup competition. Palmer scored one and set up one in that bonkers 1-4 win for the Blues against Spurs back in November and with the responsibility of getting goals firmly on his shoulders, a task he seems to bask in, we reckon he’ll be eager to get on the scoresheet.
Son Heung-Min to Score
Son Heung-Min has been having, yet again, another industrious season for Spurs, scoring 16 and assisting nine in the Premier League this far. His record against Chelsea isn’t great, he’s been on the losing side in nine of his 18 games against the Blues but Spurs need a good result here if they are to have any chance of making European football next season.
Against a makeshift Chelsea backline, Son could be one of the difference-makers here.
Dejan Kulusevski to Commit 1 or more Fouls
Spurs’ Swedish attacked Dejan Kulusevski loves to get stuck in. He’s contributed a fair amount going forward, scoring six and creating three in the league this season but it’s his defensive record that stood out to us here. The Swede averages 1.9 tackles per league game, 0.5 inceptions, and, most importantly for us here, 1.5 fouls per game.
Kulusevski’s going to be facing Conor Gallagher, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Cole Palmer when he drifts wide here and it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see him commit at least one foul against the likes of those.
He gets hooked off a fair bit too and were he to be replaced by someone like Yves Bissouma or Giovani Lo Celso, they would both be leading candidates to give away at least one foul as well.
James Maddison to have 1 or more Shots on Target
You have to wonder what Spurs’ season would have looked like had James Maddison not been out injured for 10 league matches. Since returning to the team in late January, Spurs have only lost four of their 12 games. Granted, he doesn’t score too many, just four in the league so far, it’s not for the want to trying.
The former Leicester midfielder averages a healthy 2.1 shots and we’ve all seen Chelsea leaving far too much space between their midfielders and defenders this season, which is very unlikely to change here, so Maddison should get a couple of opportunities to let fly.
Interesting, he’s been substituted 19 times over his 23 league games, usually making way for Richarlison or Timo Werner. The German is out for the rest of the season so won’t replace him here, but the Brazilian is a proven goal threat at Premier League level and would be expected to attempt efforts at goal.
Conor Gallagher to have 1 or more Shots on Target
In a similar vein to Maddison, Conor Gallagher’s likely to find himself in acres of space on occasion. Spurs commit many players when going forward so a quick pass into midfield can unlock them and wreak havoc. Gallagher has scored four and assisted six goals in the league this season and has a decent shot average of 1.3 per game. He should be causing a few problems here, and, Mauricio Pochettino isn’t shy of taking him off occasionally so the pick will transfer onto who replaces him.
