Thursday 7:30pm: Chelsea v Tottenham
Premier League match at Stamford Bridge
TV: Sky Sports Premier League
We’ve got a bonus Premier League game this week with the rearranged Chelsea vs Spurs game taking place on Thursday. There’s no love lost between these two London clubs and Spurs will be desperate for a win to keep alive their hopes of finishing fourth.
Standing in their way is former Spurs man, Mauricio Pochettino, who needs to win to appease a fanbase who are asking questions of their manager.
Cole Palmer To Score
We’re starting simple by backing Cole Palmer to score, in what will surely be one of the best popular bets on Thursday. The England man has scored 20 times in just 28 Premier League games this season, of which four appearances came from the bench. He scored from the penalty spot when these teams met in November and despite failing to score against Aston Villa last time out he’s now on 10 goals in his previous six Premier League games. He’s the man of the moment and will fancy his chances against Ange Postecoglou’s backline.
James Maddison To Score Or Assist
Noni Madueke To Have 1 Or More Shots On Target
It’s gone a little under the radar how well Noni Madueke has played at times this season for Chelsea. There’s a real talent in there and given that he was a youth player at Tottenham before moving to PSV, he will be desperate to put on a show against his former team.
He’s started his past five games for Chelsea and looks likely to get the nod against Tottenham, especially after a goal and assist against Aston Villa at the weekend. He’s had eight shots on target across his 18 Premier League appearances.
But if you dig into the numbers, he’s averaging 1.03 shots per 90 minutes played, so we’ll back him to get another on target against this Spurs’ defence.
Under 5.5 Cards
Yes, it’s a derby and yes, these two teams have history but we’re not going to let games from the past influence our choices here, especially when most players who played in the ‘Battle of the Bridge” are no longer with their respective clubs.
The meeting earlier this season is more respectful but even then, one of the two red-carded players from the hot-tempered game won’t be playing in this. The game is being officiated by Robert Jones who has taken charge of 19 Premier League games this season, blowing his whistle for a foul on average 23 times per game, and dishing out 4.47 yellow cards per game and five reds across those games.
He’s not that card-happy and we’ll take the Under here.
Cristian Romero To Commit 1 Or More Fouls
Despite his reputation as a hard-tackling defender, who often bends the laws, we’ve only seen Cristian Romero get booked seven times this season. However, we will be backing him to give up at least one foul, not just because he got sent off when these teams met earlier in the season.
Across the season he’s averaged 0.92 fouls committed per 90 minutes. Given the sheer pace in the Chelsea lineup, something Romero can struggle with, it should increase the chances of the Argentine giving up a foul.
