Preston v Leicester
Championship match at Deepdale, Preston
TV: Sky Sports, Monday, 8pm
Leicester -1
Leicester gained their immediate return to the Premier League on Friday night thanks to Leeds’ 4-0 slip-up away at QPR. The result meant that The Foxes secured automatic promotion with two games left to play.
It also meant that Enzo Maresca’s side are now in poll position to win the Championship title, which will encourage them to try and secure victory away at Preston on Monday night. Leicester made easy work of Ryan Lowe’s side earlier this season with a 3-0 win and I expect a similar result in the return fixture.
As for Preston, they are closing out their 2023/24 campaign with a whimper. They have won only one of their last six games, and haven’t scored in any of their previous three. They hold on to a slim hope of a promotion place but will need a severe turnaround in form, which I don’t see happening here and back Leicester -1.
Leicester Over 1.5 Cards
Despite their dominant 5-0 victory against Southampton on Tuesday, Leicester committed 20 fouls, more than double compared to the Saints. This isn’t uncommon for the Foxes who also gave away 12 or more fouls in their previous two games with 15 against West Brom and 12 against Plymouth.
This isn’t surprising when you look at the players Maresca has at his disposal, with the physical presence of Wilfred Ndidi in midfield, along with Jannik Vestegaard, Wout Faes, and Ricardo Pereira in defence.
Ndidi and Vestegaard regularly pick up cautions, and with the threat of suspension less of a factor as we near the end of the season, avoiding cautions becomes less of a priority.
With the added opportunity to secure the Championship title on Monday, Leicester will be scrapping for every ball, and that is why I’m backing Leicester Over 1.5 Cards
Wilfred Ndidi to be Booked
In light of the number of fouls Leicester commit, Wilfred Ndidi leads the way in the players committing them. In doing so, the Nigerian picks up a fair number of yellow cards with five in the Championship this season, with two coming in the last three games.
With Monday’s game set to be a physical encounter, you expect the midfielder to get involved in the tough battle in the middle. Ben Woodburn will be on his opposite side for Preston and could make life difficult for Ndidi and I expect him to catch him out once or twice, so I have backed Wilfred Ndidi to be Booked.
Jamie Vardy to have 1 or more Shots on Target
Leicester’s return to good form has coincided with Jamie Vardy’s reintroduction into the side. The striker has scored in both of the Foxes’ previous games, taking his goal tally to 16 in the Championship this season.
Vardy may be in the twilight of his career, but with the potential to win the Championship title and to play in the Premier League again next season already secured, he will do what he can to push the Foxes to the end. Therefore, I back him to get 1 or more Shots on Target.
