St Mirren v Rangers
Premiership match at the SMISA Stadium
TV: Sky Sports Football/Main Event, Sunday, 12:30pm
Rangers -1
Rangers should be confident of overcoming St Mirren at the SiSMA Stadium on Sunday, having already recorded three victories over the Buddies this season. The Gers have been the dominant side in this rivalry, scoring six goals in the three previous fixtures between these clubs without the concession of a single one in reply.
While Saints manager Steven Robinson has promised to cut his side loose in this game, that should only the visitors, who will thrive on any additional space. Rangers will also seek to be as ruthless as possible, aware that the title race could boil down to goal difference.
Look for the Ibrox club to be relentless in this encounter and win with some to spare, having put their recent demons to one side with a 2-0 victory over Hearts in the Scottish Cup last weekend.
Cyriel Dessers to Score
Dessers might not be the most graceful of strikers, but he has shown he can be a threat when his confidence is up. The Nigerian certainly should be feeling good about himself after scoring the goals that defeated Hearts last weekend.
He is also Rangers’ big attacking hope going into this game given that Abdallah Sima is an injury doubt and Fabio Silva is hopelessly out of form. The 29-year-old scored the winning goal when Rangers last visited Paisley and will be aiming to have a similar impact in this game.
St Mirren to Receive the Most Cards
In two of the previous three meetings between these sides, St Mirren have picked up the most cards, yet that should come as little surprise given Rangers’ position on the fair play table.
Indeed, across their last three Premiership matches, the Ibrox side have picked up just a single yellow card, even negotiating the Old Firm meeting with Celtic without so much as a caution.
In their 13 outings since the winter break, Rangers have seven times gone without picking up a booking, although in one of these games they did see a red. By contrast, St Mirren have seen a card in each of their last 10 – a run stretching back to their last meeting with the Gers.
Over 9.5 Corners
Backing over 9.5 corners is a nice way to boost the odds on a bet builder for this encounter, with both Rangers and St Mirren averaging over 9.5 corners in their matches this season.
The Buddies’ home fixtures have produced on average 9.88 of these situations per match, while Rangers’ road trips have 9.69. The previous three league fixtures between the clubs have yielded 33 corners at an average of 11 per match.
Toyosi Olusanya to be Shown a Card
St Mirren attacker Olusanya might not be the most prolific player in the visiting side when it comes to picking up cards, but he is undoubtedly the likeliest of the home team to make his way into the referee’s notebook if he starts this encounter.
The 26-year-old has picked up 0.46 cards per 90 he has played this season and is therefore excellent odds at 3.75 to trouble the referee here.
He has earned a starting place in each of the last three matches, and after scoring against Hearts earlier this month stands a good chance of retaining his spot.
With no chance of a suspension due to yellow card accumulation before the end of the season, the former Middlesbrough player, who commits more fouls per 90 than any other Saints player with 2.69, can be let off the leash.
