Dundee v Celtic
Scottish Premiership match at Dens Park, Dundee
TV: Sky Sports Football, Sunday, 3pm
Celtic (-1)
There has not been a so one-sided a rivalry in the Scottish Premiership as the one between Celtic and Dundee, with the fourth instalment arriving on Sunday at Dens Park. The three previous encounters between the sides have all been won by the Glasgow outfit, but what is most astonishing is they have claimed these matches by an aggregate total of 13-1. The previous occasion the clubs met, the Hoops embarrassed Dundee 7-1 at Parkhead. The state of Dundee’s pitch should ensure this is a more uncomfortable afternoon for Celtic, but there is unlikely to be a repeat of the 0-0 draw the Dark Blues managed against Rangers less than a fortnight ago. All the signs point to a big away win.
Matt O’Riley to score anytime
The Danish midfielder somehow continues to command significant odds to score anytime for Celtic, despite being their top scorer in the Premiership on 13 goals. He was on target in extra time last weekend against Aberdeen, showing that he is in form, and he netted in each of his previous two outings against Dundee. He may not command the same goals per 90 ratio as Kyogo Furuhashi, Celtic’s other prolific league scorer, but he is likelier to play the whole game, making him a shrewder bet at longer odds.
Dundee to receive the most cards
Celtic have not picked up a single card in three of their last four Premiership matches, with the exception being the Old Firm derby against Rangers, in which they had four players booked. They have been relatively clean against Dundee in their previous encounters this season, picking up only three cards across three games. The Dees have also managed to keep it pretty fair, but despite giving away only 14 free kicks across these games, they have picked up five cards. Dundee have also seen 70 cards this season in league play, compared to 45 for Celtic, including at least two in 12 of their last 15.
Celtic to win 7 or more corners
Celtic have been a corner-winning machine in the Premiership this season, averaging 9.27 per game overall and 8.18 on their travels. Last time they visited Dens Park, they won an astonishing 23 corners, while in the first meeting this season between the clubs, they earned nine flag kicks. The last meeting, meanwhile, appears to have been something of a statistical anomaly as they only claimed five. Since then, Celtic have won seven or more corners in all but one of their league matches – with the exception being their trip to Rangers.
Luke McCowan to be shown a card
Luke McCowan is the leading candidate to be shown a card in this match, with the Dundee midfielder having seen eight yellow cards and one red in his last 22 league matches. Although he does not typically give away many fouls – he has only three times committed more than one in a match in this run – he does have a habit of talking himself into trouble. This could be problematic for the home team if they manage to keep the match tight and it starts to get tense.
