Everton v Brentford
Premier League match at Goodison Park, Liverpool
TV: Sky Sports Premier League/Main Event, Sunday, 5:30pm

Everton and Brentford share a common goal. That goal is to play out the remainder of the Premier League season in the most boring fashion possible, meaning that they’ll have secured survival and can go into the offseason convinced that they’re destined for better things.

Well, due to the structure of one of the clubs and the lack of support for the other, I’m really not sure how elongated these celebrations will be.

Draw

After that crushing loss to Burnley, it really felt like Brentford were in trouble. Then they got a point from Man United, a point at home to Brighton, held Villa, and then beat both Sheffield United and Luton.

Everton looked odds-on to go down up until about three weeks ago, then they beat Burnley, and Forest and secured what could be their most important Merseyside derby victory in the Premier League era.

The form of these two means that they’re riding a wave, and the quickest path to security is by not jeopardizing morale, or giving the teams below them something to sniff at. Only a crisis could bin either of these two now, so this will play out in a super friendly draw, no doubt.

Under 2.5 Goals

Apart from the fact that only Sheffield United have scored fewer goals than Everton in the Premier League this season, and Brentford’s eight-goal salvo in their last two away games came against teams desperate to win those games, I think neither side will be particularly bothered.

And that’s primarily because scoring goals should invite an onslaught that an unwritten gentleman’s agreement for these two not to ruin the other’s long-term stability.

Under 1.5 First Half Goals

If the goals are to come, they’ll arrive late in the game out of sheer ineptitude.

Honestly, if you need to get the child to sleep tomorrow, sit them in front of this opening forty-five because Everton will be too afraid to go on the front foot, and Brentford won’t press for fear of Jordan Pickford going long in behind.

Ashley Young to Commit 2 or more Fouls

Even in games where players are operating at 70%, Ashley Young will still get caught for pace. In the last two games that he started, against Forest and Chelsea, he gave up five fouls. Given he’s coming back in place of an injured Vitalii Mykolenko, he’ll be chomping at the bit to not give a yard, and somehow instead give three.

Ten fouls in his last five games, one of which he played barely over an hour, means this a fine value leg to add in.

James Tarkowski to Attempt 50 or more Passes

There’s going to be spells in this game, likely the first half an hour and the final 15 minutes, where the home side are going to just keep the ball unchallenged.

It’s not going to suit neutrals, but Everton will know the Luton result at this point, and with Man City playing Forest, it’ll become clear that a point will get them to eight points clear with three games to go.

There’ll be more triangles than a box of Quality Street.
