Cardiff v Middlesbrough – Emmanuel Latte Lath Anytime Goalscorer

For all that Cardiff and Middlesbrough no longer have anything to play for, one player that desperately doesn’t want the season to end is Boro striker Emmanuel Latte Lath. The ex-Atalanta man is seemingly over those earlier season injury issues and Michael Carrick’s main man is now scoring for fun.

He is responsible for netting 50% of their goals scored over their previous six games, including a brace in Monday’s home setback to Leeds. Latte Lath will be coming up against a Cardiff outfit with not only one clean sheet across their last eight, but a team that struggles against the stronger clubs at this level.

Boro sit two places and one point above Cardiff in the table and the Bluebirds have suffered 13 defeats out of 19 season meetings versus teams above them in the standings.

Huddersfield v Birmingham – Half Time Draw

Arguably the biggest game of the season for both teams sees Huddersfield hosting fellow relegation candidates Birmingham. There is a scenario where both teams could potentially be relegated this weekend, even with a victory, so a nervy encounter is likely to materialise in this massive clash, at least in the first half.

Both teams will push for the victory but at the same time, they’ll be incredibly wary about conceding first. The hosts have secured only one league win across the season from the 21 fixtures in which they’ve shipped the opener. 15 of those were outright defeats, and a draw wouldn’t really benefit them too much, so odds would be firmly against them if they concede early on.

Something similar could be said about Birmingham too, especially considering they’ve conceded first in 25 of their league contests, which is just over half. Of those 25 matches, only three times did they complete the turnaround to claim all three points, but none of those was away from home. They’ve lost 13 of 14 away league fixtures when falling behind to a first goal.

Sheffield Wednesday v West Brom – Both Teams to Score

Victory over Blackburn last weekend meant Sheffield Wednesday moved out of the relegation zone for the first time since August. If the league table was purely based on the previous 20 games then the Owls would be a few points off the play-offs, which is an indicator of their improvement of late.

Wednesday do have an almost 70% losing record against current top-half clubs this season, however, 73% of the games played at Hillsborough at least saw both teams scoring. Their past 10 league matches have averaged 2.6 goals, and this is a game both will target a victory from.

As for West Brom, who have won once in their last six fixtures, eight of their last 11 league assignments also saw Both Teams to Score occurring. Although second only to Leeds in the Championship clean sheet tally, those have considerably dried up recently in front of goal.

The Baggies have seen their away encounters of late certainly go above and beyond compared to earlier season statistics. Those particular fixtures have averaged just shy of 3.4 goals per game, including all bar one seeing both teams scoring.

Southampton v Stoke – Stoke +2

Southampton’s automatic promotion charge all but ended with Tuesday’s 5-0 loss to Premier League-bound Leicester, so something of a drop-off wouldn’t come as a surprise. Their motivation now goes to basically getting ready for the play-offs, whereas for Stoke they are fighting to avoid slipping into League One.

Back-to-back losses for The Saints has led to some question marks surrounding both the team and the manager from some supporters, so there is a degree of vulnerability about them. Also, they’ve endured a horrific schedule this month given they have played every weekend and midweek slot possible over April. Stoke may be battling relegation but they’ve certainly gradually improved under Steven Schumacher, at least to the point of being harder to beat.

The Potters have lost just once over their last seven, whilst only four times all season have they suffered a league loss by a three-goal margin or greater. Now they’ve settled on a formation and core group of players to select from they have become more consistent, and given Southampton will be on a bit of a low entering this, the visitors should remain more than competitive.
