Middlesbrough v Leeds
Championship match at the Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough
TV: Sky Sports Football/Main Event, Monday, 8pm

Under 3.5 Goals

Realistically, Middlesbrough’s play-off hopes ended a few weeks ago and depending on results, it could be officially over before kicking a ball on Monday. Nevertheless, it shouldn’t necessarily have a massive impact on how this particular game will be played.

Boro will want to win at home to Leeds, a local rival of sorts, and Leeds have their own promotion agenda. It’s a big pressure game for the away side and this has been a winning bet in seven of their last nine, which is no coincidence given so much is on the line at the business end of the campaign.

Also, 32 of Middlesbrough’s 43 Championship clashes have not beaten this goal line. They’ll pay big respect to Leeds, even if this game has anything on it or not for them, and this combined with the visitors’ mini-slump after winning one in five indicates another cagey affair.

Emmanuel Latte Lath to Score

If Middlesbrough could have called upon Latte Lath for the entire season they’d probably be in the play-off places. The summer signing from Atalanta has been unavailable for 13 of their league fixtures this season, and for him to return a total of 12 goals from 27 games proves his capabilities.

He won’t want the season to end, having scored four times in the last three games running, making it seven strikes in nine appearances, including goals against Championship heavyweights Ipswich, Southampton and Norwich.

Someone averaging 4.25 shots over the last four games is clearly confident in his ability and with Leeds only producing one shutout in five despite a generally solid defence, the Ivorian will sense the opportunity to extend his scoring streak.

Middlesbrough +1

Leeds could win this game but the assumption is that it won’t be convincing. Things have started going against them recently, just like it has for their promotion rivals Leicester and Ipswich, and it’s no coincidence this has happened at this time of the season where every win is massive and every dropped point can feel like the end of the world.

Middlesbrough don’t really have any pressure or expectancy on them with their play-off chances gone, and for Leeds it is all about the result. Since coming back from the international break, United haven’t been quite the same, and Boro will fancy their chances here.

Michael Carrick’s side have only lost by a two-goal margin in one of their seven season meetings against the Championship top-four. It is hard to be super confident on Leeds knowing they’ve the weight of their supporters’ expectations and the situation on their shoulders. Also, the hosts are unbeaten in nine, and they’ve faced Ipswich and Southampton in that run, so they’re in a good place with their game.

(+1)

Isaiah Jones to Commit 1 or more Fouls

Jones has been a consistent performer in the Middlesbrough team for a few seasons and the versatile right-sided player has become a permanent fixture in Carrick’s team when fit. He won’t be allowed to shirk his defensive duties in this one with Leeds left winger and Championship Player of the Season Crysencio Summerville on the scene.

The 24-year-old is a tricky and skilful individual himself but there is also an edge to his game that often attracts the attention of referees. He has made 38 appearances this season in league and cup for Boro but only in nine of those games in which he hasn’t started has he failed to commit at least one foul.
