Sunday 3pm: Rangers v Hearts
Scottish Cup semi final at Hampden
TV: Premier Sports 1

Hearts (+2)

The second Scottish Cup semi-final takes place on Sunday and sees dramatically underpriced Rangers tackling Hearts at Hampden. Philippe Clement’s side come into this encounter under pressure.

A tepid midweek draw against Dundee leaves them three points behind Celtic in the race for the Premiership and, more importantly, in the context of this encounter, means they have only won two of their last eight matches across all competitions.

Hearts, meanwhile, have clearly been the third-strongest team in Scotland this season. They have had a rough time against the Gers on a couple of occasions, notably losing 5-0 at Ibrox in a game they failed to turn up in. They faced an opponent buoyant in that match. On this occasion, the reverse is true. Expect the Edinburgh club to be very competitive in this game.

Both teams to score

Rangers are at a low ebb defensively. They maintained a clean sheet against Dundee in midweek, but they had conceded in four successive league matches before that midweek trip to Dens Park, albeit shutting out Hibs 2-0 in the Scottish Cup quarter-final amidst this.

Hearts, meanwhile, are a dangerous offensive side. With the Premiership’s leading marksman Lawrence Shankland back in the team last week after illness, they scored four times against lowly Livingston.

Indeed, since that miserable showing against Rangers in February, they have scored in each of their six games. That run should continue. Meanwhile, the Ibrox outfit has only been shut out once domestically since September 3.

James Tavernier to score anytime

Rangers have scored 11 times in their four fixtures against Hearts this season, with the captain bagging four. Clement does not have a reliable scorer in attack, with Cyriel Dessers going through another difficult period and Abdallah Sima still searching for his best form after a long period out through injury.

It will be to the right back that Rangers may need to turn in this encounter. Tavernier has 24 goals in 51 games this season – an astonishing record.

Abdallah Sima to have 2 or more shots on target

Rangers suffered during Abdallah Sima’s near three-month absence from their first team due to injury, but the Senegal international winger has returned strong.

In less than 200 minutes on the park, he has 11 shots and five on target. This undoubtedly makes him one of the dangermen ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Hearts.

He has multiple shots on target in the two games he has started since returning and as a favourite of Clement is likely to see the majority of the 90 minutes. This contrasts with Todd Cantwell, who is likely to start but be taken off in the middle part of the second half.

Sima has mustered four shots in each of his two appearances against Hearts, scoring the winner when the sides met in December. That is his only shot on target against the Jambos, but he has had his shooting boots on in recent games and should be back for more success here.
