Champions League match at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Barcelona
TV: TNT Sports, Tuesday, 8pm
The shining light for the longest time during the run-in was the Premier League title race. As Italy, Germany, Spain, and France crawl to their respective league champions, the trifecta of contenders marched on, reinforcing their respective fanbases’ beliefs.
Aaaand it’s gone.
So, we need to seek a new hero. And it was hiding in plain sight all this time.
When you factor in that PSG’s window was seemingly closed, that the Italian sides are no great shakes, that Bayern are the worst they’ve been in over a decade and Barcelona are a parody, it didn’t feel like it was worth shouting about.
But, in fact, that level of parity among them all has unintentionally made it a more compelling end to the season. None of this is exemplified better than with PSG and Barcelona.
Barcelona are barely scraping past Girona to take a runners-up spot in La Liga, ten points behind their arch-rivals Real Madrid and soon to be managerless.
While PSG’s team no longer has that star power outside of Kylian Mbappe who’s gone in the summer. This is the kind of match we’ve all been craving for as football became far more about pedestrianising the sport.
PSG to Qualify for the Next Round
It’s worth pointing out that PSG were by far the better side in the first leg. If they play that game again, more often than not, the Parisians would have won it, and in almost none would they end up losing.
Some very questionable goalkeeping from Gianluigi Donnarumma hindered them greatly, while their goals generally stemmed from slick Barca-esque moves in tight spaces.
I’ll back the outsider here and suggest that doubling the sample size wields the merited result, which would be a lovely contrast to that famous night many years ago.
Over 2.5 Goals
I don’t know if you noticed the first leg, but there is no way that these two are capable of playing a cagey game of football. Especially when you consider how high the PSG line is, and how good the feet in that Barcelona midfield are.
We should see plenty of goals here.
Both Teams to Score
There’s enough individual brilliance on both sides to produce goals on the off-chance that it does become tense and you can’t say the same for some two-legged ties in Europe these days.
PSG will chase early, and Barca will have space to react, even if they don’t necessarily need it.
Raphinha to Have a Shot or More in Each Half
The focus in the first leg was to play a high line and to ensure Lewandowski didn’t get the ball to his feet and turn. It ended up playing out that Raphinha got a tonne of space to run into, cutting in from wide angles of a crowded penalty box, resulting in six shots.
Given they’ll likely employ the same approach in the second leg because they were unlucky rather than poor, he’s likely Barca’s key outlet.
Barcelona Goalkeeper to make 3 or more Saves
Ter Stegen made four saves last week, and three in the previous game against Napoli. He also had to make five saves in the game against Porto.
In fact, the only game in which he didn’t make three or more saves in this campaign was the first leg against Napoli, a close-knit game where they only had one shot on target to begin with.
It’s a different story here.
