Leicester looked to have turned a corner when achieving back-to-back victories prior to Tuesday’s away loss to Millwall, but that has brought them back to ground. They still retain an automatic promotion place but they still dropped points at a crucial time and they’ll be determined to bounce back.
The problem for Plymouth right now is they’re too easy to play against in relation to conceding chances. They’ve faced an average of 15 shots on goal over the last four matches, which goes a long way to understanding why only relegated Rotherham has a higher Expected Goals Against (xGA) figure.
Leicester may have lost to Millwall but they did win the Expected Goals (xG) battle and they hold a near 83% winning record versus bottom-half clubs this season. Also, Plymouth have a 100% losing record against the top-four mini-league of clubs in the Championship, including losing 4-0 at Leicester in December.

The best first-half record in the Championship belongs to Leicester, so they’re no strangers to starting fast. The fact they enter this off the back of a defeat means Leicester should come flying out of the traps at Home Park. With The Foxes being the league’s first-half highest away scorers and conceding a league-low six in those matches, a good case is made for the visitors leading at the break.
Furthermore, this is a Plymouth side that last tasted a home victory roughly three months ago, suffering defeat to some of Leicester’s promotion rivals Leeds and Ipswich in that time. They’d have relished this kind of test earlier in the season but they now need points and will therefore be a little worried of the kind of backlash a wounded Leicester could dish out.

For all that Leicester have the quality and talent to ramp up quite an emphatic victory, this does still have the potential of being a nervy fixture for them. They know they’ve had more than a wobble over the last few months and clearly there is a big expectancy for them to win from within themselves and the fans.
Also, Plymouth aren’t going to simply roll over and accept defeat before it has even started. They certainly won’t lack motivation with their league status on the line, plus only three of their 19 league losses came by a three-goal margin or greater.
The hosts last saw one of their league fixtures contain a minimum of five goals on January 1st. In Leicester’s case, it was February 3rd, which came before their well-publicised dip in form. Games at this stage of the season between two teams with something to play for are rarely goal-heavy thrillers.
Stephy Mavididi to Score or Assist
Whilst Leicester in general have been a little inconsistent recently, one thing they’ve relied upon is the form of Stephy Mavididi. The tricky left winger has recorded three goals and an assist over his previous five appearances in all competitions, having endured a slump of his own in the run of games beforehand.
He is now back at the top of his game and Plymouth will need maximum concentration to keep him quiet. It is well-documented of the chances Plymouth concede, so there is no reason why Mavididi won’t get in on the act.
Having already netted a brace versus Plymouth and either scored or assisted against other struggling teams like Birmingham, QPR, Huddersfield, Swansea, and Sheffield Wednesday this season, the former Arsenal youngster should enjoy a profitable evening in Devon.
Leicester to Win by Exactly 2 Goals
A chance can be taken on this being a 0-2, or 1-3 win for Leicester. In terms of talent there is no doubt who the stronger of the two teams is, but with Leicester not the most reliable recently, Plymouth scoring cannot be confidently ruled out. This is a quick turnaround for a second away game in the space of four days.
Leicester are likely to open the scoring here but don’t expect them to sit on that advantage. Plymouth will still likely take the fairly cautious route even so, meaning the visitors aren’t likely to build up a big score necessarily.
Despite Plymouth’s struggles at home, they’ve only once lost by more than a two-goal margin so they should remain competitive here at the very least.
