The Blues come into this having lost in their previous six Premier League games, thanks in part to a spectacular Man Utd meltdown on Thursday night. Chelsea are far from the finished article, as evidenced by their current 10th-placed position, but they’re now just five points from sixth.
This is a team who are more than capable of scoring goals, with 18 goals in their past six games in all competitions. They’ll be riding a wave of confidence after that victory over Man United and face a Sheffield United team who are rock bottom in the Premier League table and have given up 80 goals this season, 14 more than 19th placed Burnley.
Both teams to score
While Chelsea may be able to score goals, they’ve also got a bad habit of conceding goals. While they may have scored 18 in their past six games, they’ve also conceded 13.
That’s with just two games against a top-half team, plus a game against 19th-placed Burnley and two teams in the Championship, whom they met in the FA Cup. Mauricio Pochettino’s team give their opponents chances and on home soil we should see the Blades score.
Cole Palmer to score or assist
Cole Palmer grew up a Man Utd fan but that didn’t stop him from putting a hat-trick past his childhood team on Thursday night. The England youngster is playing at the peak of his powers and has to be backed to either score or assist against the worst defence in the Premier League.
Since arriving at Chelsea we’ve seen Palmer play 25 games, scoring 16 goals and assisting a further eight. Not only that but he’s either scored or assisted in each of his past five games in all competitions, with three assists and seven goals.
Conor Gallagher to be fouled 1 or more times
When you think of Conor Gallagher you think of a combative midfielder who loves to get his foot in. It might surprise you that Conor Gallagher has been fouled, on average, 1.4 times per game for Chelsea in the Premier League this season.
That is tied with Raheem Sterling, a player you’d expect to get fouled far more than Gallagher, and the England midfielder, along with Sterling, leads the team in fouls per game. He gets about in the middle of the park and will again here, and should be taken down at least once.
Vinicius Souza to commit 1 or more fouls in the first half
So who could be the player to bring down Gallagher? The obvious player to foul him, or any other Chelsea player is the Blades’ Vinicius Souza. The 24-year-old Brazilian is near ever-present, playing 29 of his team’s games this season and anchoring the midfield.
He has given up an average of 1.4 fouls per game, behind only George Baldock, and given he’s likely to start and be in a combative midfield battle, it makes sense for him to get an early foul against him here.
