Tuesday 7.45pm: Scotland v Northern Ireland
Friendly match at Hampden Park, Glasgow
TV: BBC Two, Viaplay

Scotland Northern Ireland is a fun one from a personal perspective.See, I’m from the Republic, and essentially what these two nations represent is a severe bitterness internally because they always seem to have better individual players than we have, despite us having a wider global legacy.

Because both of these nations took very different paths to attempted qualification for the Euros, Scotland, who almost toppled Spain as group winners, are set for another major tournament after what must have felt like a painful drought for the longest time.

Northern Ireland sort of huffed and forgot to puff, beating bottom-feeders San Marino twice and taking advantage of the already-qualified Danes in the final round of games.

These might be tucked away cosily in the north Atlantic, but they’re a million miles apart in their football trajectories. Still, at least they’ve both a weird claim about distilling the first-ever bottle of licensed whiskey in common, eh? Who said international football lacks bite?

Scotland to Win

Scotland will absolutely hammer them. Make no mistake. Even if Scotland rotate, that means that Northern Ireland are equally likely to put out some younger blood, and that’s most likely going to include calling youngsters off their shifts in Asda around Enniskillen.

There’s really not a massive amount at stake, but that likely means that Scotland can continue to be their madcap selves. Think Aston Villa but with a major feed of Irn Bru.

Northern Ireland are a bit like Coleraine with a feed of Buckfast.

Over 2.5 Goals

Fast and loose is what we’re going to see here. There were 25 goals in Scotland’s eight games in qualifying, while Northern Ireland’s squad will be a glad of a low-pressure environment to go out and actually play.

Ironically, they were in a position to move past Mick O’Neill’s blueprint of being rigid to the point of approaching unwatchable. Finally, with the Euros in the rearview, they can open up ever so slightly. To their detriment of course, but it’s stick or twist.

Both Teams to Score

But I do fancy enough change in this game that it’ll appear sloppy and chaos will break loose. I mean, how else do you entice actual human beings to watch this nonsense otherwise?

What the North have managed to find, though, is a striker with supreme confidence in Jamie Reid. An unbelievable success story for Stevenage this year, Reid has scored 17 times in his 30 games in League One. That alone makes them a more viable threat than they had been.

Under 1.5 First Half Goals

The flurry of goals will likely wait until the second half though, as is often the case in a game that will see mass changes at half-time. Remember, you generally don’t do a session with two first teams, so the second XI will probably be out of whack. What a joy.

Che Adams to Score Anytime

No, I can’t explain why a fella called Lawrence Shankland is now flavour of the month in Edinburgh, but Che Adams definitely doesn’t love it.

He’s the best pure number nine that Scotland have and I’d be expecting him to thrive here, even though he hasn’t netted for his country since June 2022.
