Romania v Northern Ireland
Friendly match at the Arena Nationala, Bucharest
TV: Viaplay Online, Friday, 7:45pm

Northern Ireland face a stern test as they travel to the Arena Nationala on Friday to face a Romanian team who we’ll be watching at Euro 2024 in the summer. The Romanians topped their group, beating the likes of Switzerland, while Northern Ireland finished a terrible fifth in their group. Can the rebuild start on Friday?

Romania -1

It was a dire qualification campaign for Michael O’Neill’s team and they really struggled, winning just three of their 10 games and not setting the world alight in attack either. Romania meanwhile won six of 10 and topped their group. They come into this full of confidence and will expect to win.

Playing on the road is never easy in international football and the atmosphere in Bucharest will be intimidating. Edward Iordanescu will likely make some changes to the team that beat Switzerland last time out, but it’s expected he’ll not play an experimental lineup, so we should see Romania winning by a couple of goals.

Romania Half Time

These days Romania are lacking any truly global megastars but that didn’t stop them really impressing during qualification. They scored first-half goals in three of their last six games and have generally started well in their matches.

The same can’t be said for Northern Ireland who have been losing at halftime in four of their last six games, a trend that should continue here against a far superior team.

Both teams to Score, No

With 16 goals in qualifying Romania weren’t the highest goalscorers in their group, six goals behind second-placed Switzerland. However, they only conceded five goals across their 10 games, something that only France, England, Albania, Belgium, and Portugal bettered, which goes to show their defensive strength.

They’re not impenetrable but when Northern Ireland only managed to score nine goals and five of those were against San Marino, it really tells us how blunt they are in attack now.

Under 3.5 Goals

Despite finishing fifth in Group H, we saw Northern Ireland concede just 13 goals in qualifying, which isn’t bad for a team that struggled so much. The rise and rise of Liverpool youngster Conor Bradley indicates that there’s talent in the backline and they won’t concede bucketloads of goals here.

Meanwhile, only Turkey and Albania scored fewer goals and finished first in their groups than the Romanians, again showing us that while they should win and do it by a margin of more than one goal, they won’t be able to score the four goals, so we’re backing Under 3.5 Goals here.

Florinel Coman Anytime Goalscorer

With Florinel Coman still playing in Romania at FCSB he is still very much an unknown entity but the 25-year-old has shown that he has some talent, and has become one of the regular starters in Romania’s attack.

Domestically he’s in good form too, having scored five goals in his past five outings for his club. If he takes that club form into this international break then Northern Ireland will need to be very wary of the left-sided forward.
