Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds
Championship match at Hillsborough, Sheffield
TV: Sky Sports Main Event, Friday, 8pm

Friday night sees a top versus bottom clash in the Championship with Leeds visiting Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday. There aren’t many stadiums in the Championship more atmospheric than Hillsborough under the floodlights and with Sheffield Wednesday coming into this following a win over Plymouth Argyle, they’ll be hoping they can escape the relegation zone, while Leeds will hope they can continue their hunt for one of the Championship’s two automatic promotion spots.

Leeds to Win

Sheffield Wednesday come into this in a great run of form with four wins in a row but all of those teams are in the bottom half and a visit from Leeds challenges them with a substantial step up in class.

Leeds are third in the Championship and rapidly gaining ground on Leicester who are in currently in pole position. A win here would leapfrog Leeds over second-placed Ipswich, at least until they play on Saturday, and put further pressure on the top two. With Leeds winning 10 of their last 11 games there’s simply nobody who can live with them.

Over 2.5 Goals

One of the secrets to the Wednesday resurgence has been keeping games tight and low-scoring but that doesn’t always work against the best teams and for my money, there isn’t a more dangerous attack in the Championship than Leeds. When they are firing they are absolutely lethal, thanks to the incredible amount of speed and directness they have in attacking positions.

We’re going to see one of the Championship’s best teams come here and win. Going a goal down will mean that Wednesday have to push, especially given that they are still in the relegation zone and in need of points. That will open them up to conceding more goals or even bagging one themselves.

Both teams to Score

Leeds will win this one by a goal or two and we’ve already spoken about their attack. They’re stacked with the likes of Daniel James, Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto, and Patrick Bamford all hugely threatening players, who’ll get Leeds goals.

Given that they’ve won five in six there’s no doubt that Wednesday and the fans at Hillsborough will be confident that their team could steal something from this game. They may be up against the tightest defence in the league but they have belief and they’ll continue to make chances.

Daniel James to Score or Assist

Amongst Leeds’ attacking talents there are a number of star players but Daniel James has a skillset like no other. He isn’t the perfect player by any stretch of the imagination, and he’s arguably too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premier League but his speed is electric and he’s added more strings to his bow this term, and is no longer just a speed merchant with no end product.

In 32 Championship games, of which eight came from the bench he’s scored 11 goals and assisted seven more, giving him 18 goal contributions. That’s a tremendous haul for the 26-year and after scoring in an impressive performance against Stoke last time out, he’ll be looking to add another goal or assist to his tally.

Will Vaulks to commit 1 or more Fouls in the First Half

He may have just started 18 of his 25 Championships games this season but Will Faulks has still managed to pick up six yellow cards. The 30-year-old anchors the Wednesday midfield but that can lead to issues, with him likely to give up fouls, especially against top opposition.

Vaulks has averaged 1.4 fouls per game and now faces one of the best midfields in the league. That’s a dangerous position for the Welshman to be in. With Vaulks looking to make a statement, we reckon he’ll be sending a first half message to the Leeds’ players.
