UNDER 2.5 GOALS

This is a big game in the race for the EFL Championship play-offs. Coventry are in the chasing pack in the hunt for the top-six and West Brom are aiming to consolidate their current standing in 5th. Just five points separates the two clubs and this could easily turn into quite a cagey affair.

Fixtures involving Carlos Corberan’s Baggies can often go that way given the tactical stranglehold he has on matches of this nature. Seven of their 11 encounters versus top-seven opposition this season have contained Under 2.5 Goals, of which four were at home. With both clubs also within the top-six best defensive records in the division, this has the makings of a tight yet intense battle.

ERIK PIETERS TO COMMIT 1 OR MORE FOULS

The 35-year-old Dutchman has been one to benefit from Kyle Bartley’s injury and Semi Ajayi’s lengthy stint at AFCON with finalists Nigeria and has started each of the last four games. He has earned big praise from his manager, meaning he should again hold his central defensive role alongside Cedric Kipre.

Within this run, Pieters has committed a total of five fouls, including 2+ fouls in the meetings against Southampton and Hull, who are also in the promotion pack along with the likes of Coventry. He will be up against one of the form Championship strikers in the shape of Ellis Simms on Friday night and making at least one foul across the 90 minutes is anticipated.

JAKE BIDWELL TO COMMIT 1 OR MORE FOULS

Bidwell has been in-and-out of the Coventry starting XI recently but is backed to enjoy a run in the side once again after Jay Dasilva was hooked at half-time in the 3-0 loss to Preston following a below-par display. However, that’s not to say Bidwell has been error-free himself in recent times.

In fact, the former QPR defender has committed a foul in each of his last four appearances, despite only starting two of those and not once completing a full 90 minutes. He also made 2+ fouls against Leicester, Leeds, Southampton and Sunderland; all clubs either firmly in or on the fringes of the promotion picture, just like Coventry. Bidwell is likely to be up against in-form West Brom winger Tom Fellows and it’ll only take one slip for Bidwell to get a ticking off from match referee Lewis Smith.

ELLIS SIMMS TO HAVE 1 OR MORE SHOTS ON TARGET

After a frustrating period of not really making a mark in the Coventry forward line, Simms has established himself in the starting XI and is now the first name on Mark Robins’ team sheet. The striker has started four games in succession, recording five goals in the process, including an FA Cup hat-trick against Maidstone United earlier this week.

Five goals in four is a great return, but he also has 11 shots on target in that period, meaning he could’ve easily added more. Breaking through a stubborn West Brom defence may not be so easy, but even in his non-scoring patch he was still working the goalkeeper. He has forced a save in seven of the last eight games in which he started, and should do so again at The Hawthorns.

COVENTRY TO HAVE 3 OR MORE SHOTS ON TARGET

In 2024, Coventry have played 13 matches in all competitions and only in one of those have they failed to have at least three shots on target. They are coming off the back of a hefty 5-0 win where they had 15 shots on target, and whilst that was against non-league Maidstone, they can still take confidence from a performance of that nature.

On the flip side, in only two of West Brom’s 11 games in 2024 has the opposition not hit three or more shots on target. Therefore, everything is pointing to this theme continuing on Friday. Whether they can indeed get the ball past Albion goalkeeper Alex Palmer is another matter, but the Sky Blues are ranked 5th on Championship xG figures, so they know how to create big chances, which should work the keeper.
