    Arsenal v Newcastle
Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, London
    TV: TNT Sports, Saturday 8pm

The Premier League title race this season is like a Formula One race, only interesting. The three ‘cars’ in the running will all have opportunities to stretch ahead, make up ground, or overtake at different points as their matches will all fill different time slots.

Take this weekend. Liverpool aren’t in league action thanks to the Carabao Cup final but start top by four points having played a game more. Manchester City will probably win at Bournemouth in the early evening match on Saturday, and if they do, the pressure will be on for Arsenal in this game, which kicks off at 8pm.

You’ll have to miss the last 10 minutes of Gladiators but this match should definitely be worth watching.

      Arsenal -1

Arsenal will be fired up by thoughts of revenge. Newcastle won the corresponding fixture 1-0 with their goal needing to pass three VAR checks before it was awarded. Mikel Arteta said the decision was a “disgrace” and “embarrassing.” Never mind that Kai Havertz should’ve been sent off, if anything was embarrassing it was Arsenal complaining to the PGMOL about the goal.

Anyway, this is a big game for both teams. Newcastle might be too far adrift in the race for a top-four finish but they certainly stand a chance of qualifying for Europe. A win here would be a big boost.

The problem for Eddie Howe is that his side is going to run into an Arsenal side in fantastic form. Granted, they created four-fifths of sod all when losing to Porto on Wednesday, but they have won their last five league matches by an aggregate score of 21-2, and one they conceded was a Gabriel own goal when he got in a tangle against Liverpool.

Newcastle have struggled in the bigger matches this season too. They have lost home and away to both Liverpool and Manchester City and have suffered defeat a further five times on the road. If you’re losing 0-3 at Everton can you expect to get anything at Arsenal?
No. The underlying expected goal data suggests a bet on Arsenal with a -1 Handicap is a good value selection and their recent league form says the same.

            Over 3.5 Goals

The recent history of this head-to-head suggests we should anticipate a low-scoring match. None of the last six meetings have seen more than two goals and you have to go back four years to find the last clash to feature four. Everyone remembers the 4-4 from 2011 but the recent matches have seen far fewer goals.

This one could go crazy though. Over 3.5 Goals has paid out in 15 of Newcastle’s 25 league matches this season, more than for any other team, and the proportion is even higher for away games. Most pertinently, there have been at least four goals in four of the Magpies’ trips to face teams currently above them in the table.

The same bet has proven profitable in seven of Arsenal’s 12 matches at the Emirates and with Newcastle having conceded over twice as many goals as at this stage last season, expect Over 3.5 Goals here.

              Bukayo Saka to Score

You could make a strong case for Bukayo Saka or Alexander Isak for goal scorer picks here, simply because they are the one player on either side who is in double figures for league goals this season.

However, the Arsenal man is in electric form at present, with six goals in his last four league matches and seven in his last eight in all competitions. Back Saka to crack ‘em with a goal here.

              Over 10.5 Corners

The last meeting of these teams was a real collector’s item on the corner front, with Newcastle having none and Arsenal having 11. It was also unusual for these teams in 2023/24 as neither average more than 10 per game, with only the teams from the M23 derby averaging fewer.

Arsenal had at least 10 when hosting Brighton, Manchester United, Tottenham, and West Ham though, so that is their mark when teams of similar standard to Newcastle visit the Emirates. With that record, there should be Over 10.5 Corners in this match easily enough.

              Over 3.5 Cards

This fixture in north London can be feast or famine on the card front – there were eight last season, none in 2020/21. There’s likely to be a few here. None of Newcastle’s away games this season has seen fewer than three bookings, with 4.8 the average. There were six at the Etihad and eight at Anfield, with Howe’s heroes collecting five each time.

Our match referee Paul Tierney’s cards average is a little down in 2023/24 but he’s still flashed 3.7 per Premier League game across the last four campaigns. We can bank on Jurgen Klopp’s least favourite person to show Over 3.5 Cards on Saturday night.
