Inter Milan v Atletico Madrid

Champions League match at the San Siro, Milan
TV: TNT Sports, Tuesday, 8pm

Both Teams to Score: No

Atletico Madrid may be coming into this tie as group winners, while Inter may be in the round of 16 after failing to win a relatively easy group, but last year’s finalists are in a much better place to progress to the last eight. Inter are the runaway league leaders in Italy, currently enjoying a nine-point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand after dropping just nine points in their opening 24 league games.

They have kept clean sheets in five of their last six games in all competitions and have conceded just 12 goals in the league at a rate of a goal in every second game.

Atletico, meanwhile, are currently 11 points adrift in the Spanish title race and have failed to score in two of their last three games in all competitions. The hosts have been rightfully installed as the odds-on favourites to progress to the quarter-finals and they should hold Atletico scoreless on Tuesday night.

Over 2.5 Atletico Madrid Cards

Atletico Madrid have not been as poorly behaved as some of the Diego Simeone teams of old, such as the Atletico side that picked up a staggering 110 bookings and five dismissals in the 2014/15 La Liga season. However, Simeone’s side are averaging over two cards per game in both the league and the Champions League.

Atletico picked up 12 bookings and one sending off in their six group-stage games last winter and are sure to set out to frustrate an in-form Inter on Tuesday night. The away side have picked up 10 cards in their last three Champions League away knockout ties, stretching back to a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge in 2021.

Meanwhile, seven of their group stage cards came away from home this season. They could easily pick up at least three cards at the San Siro on Tuesday.

Antoine Griezmann to have 1 or more Shots on Target

Partly because they found themselves in a particularly weak group, Atletico Madrid actually rank surprisingly highly in terms of goals and shots on target per game. Simeone’s side scored 17 times during the group stages – the second-highest in the competition – but eight of those goals did come against a hapless Celtic outfit.

They also averaged 5.3 shots on target per game – the seventh-highest in the Champions League – and will likely have a few efforts on goal on Tuesday night, despite coming up against a far better defensive unit in Inter Milan.

Of Atletico’s players, Antoine Griezmann is arguably the most likely to register a shot on target on Tuesday. Griezmann has attempted the most shots per game of any Atletico player this season, averaging 2.5 in the league and 2.8 in the Champions League.

He has scored 18 goals in all competitions and will be the man that Simeone looks to as Atletico attempt to come out of the San Siro with a result.

PSV v Borussia Dortmund

Champions League match at the Philips Stadion, Eindhoven
TV: TNT Sports, Tuesday, 8pm

PSV to have 6 or more Shots on Target

PSV, like Inter Milan, will fancy their chances of progressing to the quarter-finals despite coming into this tie as a group runner-up.
Like Inter Milan, PSV are running away with their domestic title, taking an astonishing 62 points from a possible 66 to open up a ten-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie.  They also face a stuttering Dortmund side that is currently 17 points off the Bundesliga summit.

Dortmund, to their credit, topped the Group of Death ahead of PSG, AC Milan, and Newcastle last December but are conceding more than a goal per game in Germany and may struggle against a PSV side that has scored 70 league goals this season.

PSV were less impressive in Europe, where they picked up nine points out of a possible 18 to finish second behind Arsenal in Group B, but they certainly didn’t hold back in the group stages. The Dutch league leaders averaged 5.8 shots on target per game in those six games and can match that average against a Dortmund side currently facing 14 shots per game in the Bundesliga, leaving them in the bottom half in terms of shots faced per game.

BVB faced 46 shots in their three Champions League away games this season at an average of over 15 per game and could easily face a similar number on Tuesday. There is a good chance that PSV will hit the target at least six times.

Under 3.5 Cards

Both PSV and Dortmund posted respectable records in terms of discipline during the group stages, with PSV collecting 12 bookings in six games and Dortmund collecting nine (the third-best record in the competition). Both also average around 11 fouls per game and Tuesday’s first leg is unlikely to be an overly fiery affair.

PSV are averaging under one card per game domestically, while Dortmund are average fewer than two cards per game in Germany. There is a good chance that the referee will keep his cards in his pocket on Tuesday.
