This Saturday we turn our attention to the continent where football is not only better-preserved and more widely respected, it’s just a bit more fun. My favourite bit about this year’s Bundesliga and La Liga campaigns is that it’s not as if the contenders were the likely challengers to begin with either.
Yes, to address the elephant in the room – we don’t need to hyperinflate the purity of Girona’s rise. But even from a spectator standpoint, it feels like while Madrid might be the most talented team in Spain, and Bayern the most star-studded, neither feel like the most drilled or complete.
Enter what’s potentially the most decisive part of the season for both – the title clashes.
Bayer Leverkusen v Bayern Munich
Bundesliga match at the BayArena, Leverkusen
TV: Sky Sports, 5:30pm
Leverkusen and Draw
Bayern Munich have, for my money, the best non-robotic striker in world football in Harry Kane. And yet for all the records he might well be setting, the team around him look off the boil somewhat. That potentially feels odd to say, but even looking at their recent run of wins – the thing you always attribute to Bayern is their element of control. That’s not been a characteristic of them this year.
3-1 win against Mochengladbach? Fine, but they were 1-0 down. Netted three away to Augsburg? Yeah, but they shipped two and the minnow missed a penalty. Scraping past Union by a goal to nil and losing to Werder?
Xabi Alonso’s unit ooze calmness and they get my vote to take a point at least.
Under 2.5 Goals
Let’s discuss one thing: Xabi Alonso going to Liverpool will not see them gegenpress the life out of the opposition nor will it have them go hammer and tongs. Alonso is all about letting games comes to him. They’ve conceded just fourteen times in twenty games for God’s sake.
Florian Wirtz to Have a Shot on Target
An absolute sensation, Wirtz is the creative epicenter of a team who are reliant on keeping the ball in clever moments.
While all the serenity around him keeps things ticking, he’s often the creative spark. In a game where they might even less possession than normal due to Bayern committing men forward, he should benefit for more shooting opportunities.

Real Madrid v Girona
La Liga games at the Santiago Bernabau, Madrid,
TV: Viaplay, 5:30pm
Girona and Draw
This will be an oddly similar blurb to the above, but Real Madrid being the likely winners of LaLiga speaks more to the Barcelona crisis and the overdrawn stay of Diego Simeone across the city. Yes, the arrival of Jude Bellingham has energised the fanbase, but they’re allowing really harmless teams score in moments of seemingly little threat.
And combining that with Atleti’s last minute equaliser last weekend, I feel like they come into this trying to prove a point and unfocused. Girona have conceded just once in their last four. They’re the safe bet.
Artem Dovbyk to Score
He’s just a handful and might even the most desirable striker in Spain this summer. Having netted fourteen times in his twenty-one games, you’d feel like Real would pay him more attention but it’s not really their way, and this fella can hurt you in any number of ways.
