Sheffield Wednesday v Birmingham
Championship match at Hillsborough
TV: Sky Sports Football & Main Event, 8pm
Half Time Draw
The pitch at Hillsborough has come under scrutiny in recent times, with Watford manager Valérien Ismaël describing it as ‘awful’. That particular clash finished 0-0 and don’t be surprised to see another slow-burner here in this key bottom-six encounter.
Sheff Wed ideally need to win this game, but after shipping four goals in each of their last two they will view it as critically important to not concede early here, which would see their heads drop. Birmingham are still adjusting to life under Tony Mowbray and the pitch conditions means they could also take some time settling into this contest.
Siriki Dembele to Have One or More Shots on Target
For all that The Blues sit only four points above the relegation zone, one consistently bright spark in the team this season has been winger Siriki Dembélé. The former Peterborough United attacker has made the left wing berth his own and that has remained the case despite the change of manager.
Only Jay Stansfield has scored more club league goals and whilst he has netted only once in his last 14 appearances, he has recorded eight shots on target across the last six games in which he has started.
Djeidi Gassama to Have One or More Shots on Target
20-year-old Gassama has taken time to settle into surroundings in South Yorkshire after making the move from Paris Saint-Germain in August. However, he has now established himself as a key player in Danny Röhl’s strongest eleven, so much so he was rested for the midweek cup loss at Coventry to ensure he is ready for Friday night.
Gassama has managed six efforts on target across his previous seven displays for The Owls. Expect to see him being fed the ball on a regular basis given he is their main offensive threat at the moment.
If they’re to get the result they want then the tricky forward will be involved at every opportunity. With Birmingham right back Ethan Laird not long back from a two-month injury absence then this could be a battle Wednesday win on the pitch.

Barry Bannan to be Shown a Card
The Scot is closing in on 400 club appearances for Wednesday, highlighting his importance to the team. They are going to need him at their best more than ever in the remainder of the season if they’re to avoid an instant return to League One.
He too was rested for the Coventry loss on Tuesday, meaning he is fully fresh for this vital Championship fixture. Bannan has the club at heart and knows three points here would put some life back into their survival hopes. Having claimed three yellow cards over four league matches last month, he is no stranger to the referee’s notebook.
Over 3.5 Sheffield Wednesday Corners
Although struggling in the relegation zone, Sheff Wed are ranked 8th in the league for crosses into the box. Röhl is big on getting the ball into his wide men, with the previously-mentioned Gassama along with Anthony Musaba and offensive full backs Marvin Johnson and Pol Valentín never shy in hitting the byline.
The hosts will go all-out for three points at Hillsborough and all the space will come down the flanks, so here’s hoping those factors will help Wednesday tick over the corner count. Considering they’ve achieved 4+ corners in seven of their last 10 Championship performances, there’s every chance they will do so again.
