Celtic to win

Celtic’s trip to Aberdeen has been complicated by the home side sacking manager Barry Robson shortly before the Pittodrie encounter. It makes the Scottish Premiership clash more complicated for the Hoops, with the home team likely to offer a response after a series of poor performances. But Celtic remain the class act in Scotland, even if their 1-0 win over Ross County last weekend should be filed under the category of thoroughly unconvincing.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have won their last six in all competitions, while away from home they have picked up nine wins in 11 league matches. Against Aberdeen, meanwhile, they have won their last nine. Indeed, the sides played each other four times during 2023, with Hoops claiming an astonishing aggregate success of 18-1, including a 6-0 victory when the teams met in November.

The Dons will expect to be far more robust this time around under new management, but while there might be new spirit in the home side, the same lack of quality will prevent them from taking anything from this game.

Aberdeen to receive the most cards

There will be a lively home crowd behind the Reds for this encounter and the least they will demand is a bit of blood and thunder to the performance – something that has been missing in recent weeks.  Indeed, Aberdeen supporters will see their side sitting in second place in the Fair Play Table as evidence of a lack of guts to the squad. On Saturday, they will expect to see a little more fight, led by captain Graeme Shinnie.

Celtic, meanwhile, are not a team that pick up many cards on a regular basis. They have only received 31 cards in their 23 matches this term – easily the lowest in the Premiership.

Nicky Devlin to be shown a card

Nicky Devlin promises to have his work cut out on Saturday, with the right back in direct competition with Luis Palma. The expectation is that he will be hard and in his opponent’s face on what is expected to be a charged occasion. Devlin might be relatively long odds to be booked, but having appeared in the referee’s notebook six times this season, only Slobodan Rubezic with 10 has a higher crime count – and he is an injury doubt.

Celtic will likely channel many of their attacks into the wide areas, testing the discipline of the Aberdeen wing backs to the maximum.

Celtic to win 9 or more corners

Celtic are corner specialists and it shows just how much they were off their game last weekend against Ross County that they only won seven flag kicks. This season, they average comfortably more than 10 per match and upwards of nine per game away from home. Expect Celtic to take the game to Aberdeen in this encounter, with the hosts seeking first and foremost to provide stubborn opposition. That should allow the Hoops to exert their style of play onto the match and, in turn, win a high number of corners.

The Glasgow side’s matches produce over 13 corners on average per game, and in both their previous matches against the Dons this season, they have hit at least nine corners.

Luis Palma to have 1 or more shots on target

Luis Palma is a man with a point to prove after missing a penalty against Ross County last weekend. Still, the 24-year-old Honduran is Celtic’s main offensive outlet and is sure to get plenty of opportunities to make up for his failure a week ago. Playing off the left, Palma has more shots per game than any other Celtic player in the league this season, and while he invariably lasts little more than 70 minutes, he has typically done his damage by that time.

He seems to relish playing Aberdeen, too. Last time he faced the Dons, he chalked up three shots, one goal and a hat-trick of assists. Expect him to be at the fore once more.
