    Cape Verde v Mauritania
AFCON Last 16 match at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Abidjan

    Both Teams to Score

There aren’t too many out there giving Mauritania much of a chance here, they have, after all, only won just one of their last five fixtures. However, Cape Verde have only kept three clean sheets over their last 10 matches and one of those was against Eswatini, a team ranked 149th in the world so, we can’t put too much weight on that one.

Mauritania have scored three over their three games thus far and against such a leaky defence we can see them getting on the scoresheet while the Blue Sharks have scored at least two in six of their last 10 and at least one in eight of their last 10.

    Cape Verde to Win

That record of scoring at least two in six of their last 10 is really swinging us to back Cape Verde here. They’ve also had far tougher games than Mauritania, beating Ghana and grabbing a late equaliser against Egypt in their last game. Mauritania lost to both Burkina Faso and Angola in their group games before beating a very disappointing Algeria in their final match. That goal-scoring record means we’re backing the Blue Sharks.

A Goal Score in Both Halves

Cape Verde like to get ahead of teams as early as they can and have scored in the first 45 minutes in all four of their most recent competitive games. That’s a trend we have to exploit and seeing this market still priced well above Evens means we’re getting plenty of value here.

Ryan Mendes to Score or Assist

Yes, former Manchester United flop Babé plays for Cape Verde and yes, he’s already scored and has averaged a whopping four shots per game so far but at the time of writing it looks like he won’t have shaken off the injury he picked up in their 3-0 win over Mozambique. Instead, we’re looking at Ryan Mendes who has been an ever-present in the side, scoring one and creating one, and averages just shy of a shot per game. Mendes loves to come in off the right wing and set up a forward or have a pop. We think we’re getting some decent odds here for him to provide or score.

Idrissa Thiam to have 1 or more Shots on Target

Mauritania’s three goals have all come from different players, Sidi Amar, Aboubakary Koita, and Mohamed Dellahi but it’s Idriss Thiam who has caught our eye here after turning in a stellar performance against Algeria in his last game.

Usually sitting behind the striker or out wide on the right he’s also, like Mendes above, happy to be a provider or try to get his name on the scoresheet. We reckon he’ll be landing one on target here.
