Tuesday, 8pm: Chelsea v Middlesbrough
Carabao Cup match at Stamford Bridge
TV: Sky Sports Football & Sky Sports Main Event

Chelsea (-1)

Chelsea remain one of the most confusing and difficult teams to predict. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have appeared to turn a corner on several occasions this season, only to take two backward steps in a game they should be winning.

The most recent example of this unfortunate habit was in their 1-0 defeat against Middlesbrough two weeks ago after winning three games on the spin. That defeat has left them with work to do to qualify for the League Cup final, but their recent home form should see them over the line.

Chelsea have won six games on the spin at Stamford Bridge in all competitions, while Boro have just one win in their last five games (in their 1-0 victory over Chelsea two weeks ago). The home side should get the job done within 90 minutes on Tuesday night by covering the Chelsea (-1) handicap.

Cole Palmer to score anytime

Cole Palmer endured a nightmarish outing at the Riverside two weeks ago, missing three glorious opportunities in the Blue’s 1-0 defeat. However, Palmer remains, by far, Chelsea’s most dangerous threat in front of goal and is good value to make amends for his poor finishing in the first leg.

Palmer scored the only goal in his side’s recent win over Fulham and is currently their top scorer in all competitions, with nine goals to his name since making the switch from Manchester City in the summer.

He has scored five times in his last nine appearances and, as Chelsea’s penalty taker, Palmer the most likely player to get on the scoresheet on Tuesday.

Over 2.5 Chelsea cards

Chelsea only picked up one card in the defeat at Boro two weeks ago, but their recent record suggests they will not be so disciplined in the return leg on Tuesday. The Blues have picked up 16 yellow cards in their last four league games, including five bookings in their previous home game against Fulham.

They boast the worst disciplinary record in the Premier League, collecting 63 bookings and three red cards in 21 games at a rate of over three cards per game. Considering there is a place in the League Cup final at stake and a deficit to overcome, there is every chance that Chelsea will continue their poor disciplinary record at Stamford Bridge with Over 2.5 Cards.

Chelsea to have eight or more shots on target

Chelsea passed up several excellent opportunities at the Riverside two weeks ago and should create several chances on Tuesday as they attempt to turn this semi-final around. Mauricio Pochettino’s side had five shots on target in that defeat at Boro. Compared to 12 in their recent outing against another Championship side, Preston, in the FA Cup third round.

Chelsea have had 37 shots on target in their last six games in all competitions, averaging just over six shots on target per game. They enjoyed 72% possession against Boro at the Riverside, and it would not be surprising if they posted similar statistics in the return leg.

The Blues will likely lay siege to the Boro goal and almost certainly attempt more than 20 shots. Chelsea are good value to find the target at least eight times.

Over 11.5 corners

Chelsea’s dominance in possession should translate into a high number of corners for Pochettino’s side. They won six corners as they searched for an equaliser at the Riverside two weeks ago and will probably win a lot more in the return leg.

Particularly if Boro can frustrate them and hold out for as long as possible. Chelsea averaged over six corners per game in their last six home games in all competitions and are likely to do significantly better than average on Tuesday night.

Michael Carrick’s side may also win a few corners as they look to relieve pressure and waste valuable time. If Chelsea score early and turn the tie on its head, Boro will be forced to take the initiative and could win several corners of their own. Either way, there should be plenty of corners at Stamford Bridge so I’ll take Over 11.5.
